GSG 1911 - Why Does My Magazine Hold 11 Rounds?

This feels like when I complain that my #### is too big. No one cares. Keep your piehole shut, and please stop making issues where there isn't one. FFS, talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

I discovered one of my magazines could hold 11 cartridges entirely by accident. I was at the range with a friend and loaded both mags.I did not pay much attention to how many cartridges I loaded in each...they only hold 10 or so I thought.

We took turns, 5 shots each and then walked forward to check our targets. Then I Switched mags and I took 5 shots and handed him the gun. He took 5 and I said "OK, the guns empty let's check targets. I was about to step forward when he pulled the trigger again and shocked the sh_t out of me. Thinking it only holds ten and being extremely diligent at counting shots I called cease fire and inspected the gun. I reloaded the mag with 11 rounds. I then checked my first mag and it could only load 10. I see this as a serious safety issue and we were lucky no one was injured.

I have contacted Blue Line as this thread suggested and I am waiting for a response. I did not buy from them so I'm not sure they will help get this remedied. I received one mag with the gun when I purchased from Wanstall's and I purchased a second mag from Island Outfitters locally in Victoria I am not sure who sold me the problem mag so it's not clear to me who is responsible to fix this. In the meantime i will be carefully only loading 10 in each.

Hopefully Blue Line will respond to my email soon and I'll go from there.

.

Not verifying the gun is unloaded, and pulling the trigger after saying to check targets does sound like a serious safety issue.

Any pistol with a 10 round magazine can hold 11 rounds, with one in the chamber.
Not checking that the gun is unloaded, and just assuming you have counted properly to prove your gun unloaded is the safety issue, not an 11 round mag.

My step forward was to relieve him of the gun before we check targets. Each and every time I take the gun from him I remove the mag and verify the gun is unloaded. I am not a complete idiot. My point was that having an unexpected round in the gun can present a safety issue. He thought he had 5 shots before empty because like me he thought the mag held 10. Anything that is unexpected or unplanned can be the beginning of an accident. I prefer a 10 round magazine to be empty after 10 shots. I never load a round in the chamber until I rack the gun when I am ready to shoot. IMHO having an 11th round in the chamber or in the magazine is a safety issue if the shooter is unaware of the extra round. I guess I did not explain myself clearly but thanks for the reprimand.

Lol, reprimand. If you read again it's your friend who was the problem, not you, and definitely not the mag.

A 11 round mag is not in anyway a safety issue. Only a potential legal issue.

It was only an unexpected round because you never counted how many you put in, but were "extremely diligent" counting how many were shot. Always assume it's loaded, then it will never be unexpected. Pretty basic.

Also does the GSG not hold open when empty?

I have two GSG magazines. I counted rounds 10 into one and then filled the other while we chatted. I made a mistake assuming they were both the same legal 10 round magazines instead of counting the rounds into the second. This is not the first time I have used this pistol and obviously I must have counted the rounds into each in the past as I have never had an 11th round before. This time I didn't count and that was obviously an error on my part. We fired off the first magazine 5 each and expect the same from the second. Yes the slide does lock back on empty and obviously it did not as was able to fire an 11th shot. I took steps to have the mag fixed so there will not be a future accident from an unexpected 11th round. There was no visual way of knowing if I was loading a 10 or 11 round mag as they looked identical. I will take steps to always count the number of cartridges I load into a magazine for any gun. It was a lesson learned on my part.

Really, I'm not trying to criticize the way you shoot. I just see the mag issue as a non issue, is all.

Count your shots or don't, I don't always count. Either way is safe as long you don't just assume it's empty. Then the mag size is irrelevant. My opinion only. ;)

What happened to ACTS & PROVE???

What happened to ACTS & PROVE???

Obviously you missed part of the thread where I said I do take the gun from him, remove the magazine and verify it's safe...we always ensure guns are unloaded before walking down range...enough of the holier than thou comments please, I only posted today to thank Blue Line for their great service. BTW, I was handling firearms safely long before some bureaucrat invented a couple of acronyms to replace common sense.

I just checked my GSG mags, 3 of them hold 11 rounds.

I feel the only responsible thing to do is to turn myself into the authorities and take my punishment like a man, it was nice knowing you all, see you in 3 years.

Then it's not a safety issue at all. The magazine could hold 11 rounds, or it could hold 111 rounds. It makes no difference.

You can defend the situation all you want, but calling the range SAFE without proper PROVEing is nobody’s but your fault. I’m sorry, but if you say you’ve checked the gun before going down the range to check targets and didn’t see there was a round in the chamber (the mag has to be removed) then I think you need a pair of good glasses, or you didn’t follow the safety protocol.

I guess you should also pass the knowledge and practice of ACTS & PROVE to your friend.
