Anyone run a Savage FCP-SR? Thoughts?

Hello folks!

I've been looking into getting into precision shooting for awhile now, and it looks like soon I'll have the funds to purchase a new rig to test the water with, so to speak.

I was looking at the Savage 10 precision carbine for awhile, but the FCP-SR has now caught my interest. I like the magazine setup and the ability to use 10-round magazines with this rifle. I'm thinking that it would pair up nice with a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 or 6-24. Slap a decent bipod on it and I think it would make for a decent rifle that isn't too expensive to learn with.

Anybody else use on of these rifles? What is your experience with them? Availability of extra mags?

Am I on the right track for a precision rifle game?

As a side note, I have just recently purchased a reloading setup, but haven't had time to do anything with it, but I'll be able to reload for the rifle once I get some spare time.

I looked at those but I got an FCP-K (in .223) instead because I wanted to use it for coyote hunting as well as range work. Mags for it are unobtainium...nobody seems to sell them and Savage themselves never has them in stock. You might have better luck with the FCP-SR but I know the mags for mine don't work with any of the other Savage rifles. The 10 shot mag would be a really nice feature to have even if you only had the one.

I've got a Vortex on mine too (though it's just a Crossfire II...no way I can afford a big boy scope) and it's a nice setup. Way more accurate than I'll ever be and I have an el cheapo set of rings and bipod to boot. I'm sure all my bullet holes would be touching at 100 yards if I did my part.

IMO you can't go wrong with any Savage rifle or Vortex product. I don't doubt you'd be happy with whatever setup you decide on.
 
Nice rifle, mine shot better than 3/4 MOA. I'm positive there was room for a little improvement as well.

AI type mag so you have some choices of manf. and capacity.
 
I used to have a Savage Model 11 in 223 that shoots great, now I upgraded my rifle to a Savage 10 FCP-k in 308 that shoots even better. you cant go wrong with Savage, accuracy is in its vein

this is a group I shot last week, out of box, had no modification, factory ammo, topped with a Bushnell ET5154 scope, Accu-Stock&Accu-trigger comes with it. and it punched holes like this constantly.

I am also attracted to buying FCP-SR because it comes with a detachable AI style mag & rails... Which would save some $ on what i need to buy to get going. I do not like the camo finish though, but maybe in person i'll change my mind. on the other hand that is easily fixable with some paint :D. I havent seen that many reviews of its out of box accuracy though...
 
I've shot a Precision Carbine in 308 and it grouped well. I don't see why the FCP-SR would be any different, since it's basically the same rifle but with 24" barrel and a different magazine setup. Buy with confidence!
 
I've shot a Savage which had been fitted with aftermarket 10-rd mags...don't know the brand. Sounds like a good idea, but the darned mag makes carrying the gun uncomfortable and awkward. I can no longer see any point in the big mag...if you're shooting slowly enough to keep your barrel halfway cool, what good is it? It's not a semi-auto noisemaker.

What is the appeal of these in a precision bolt gun? Or even a hunting gun?

Ya, id like some 10round mags for My fcp-k in .300wm, and i have no problem shooting it until the rain hisses on it.
 
FCP-SR uses AI mags if I'm not mistaken, not too hard to find a dealer, FCP-K totally different mag. I agree the ten round mag is a bit of a pain. I like shooting ten round strings, so off the bench it was great. If I'm on my belly though I like a low bipod and I found on occasion irregularities on the ground interfered just a little. If I was getting a few spares I'd get two 5's for sure.

Was looking in the Savage catalouge to see if I could find ref to the AI mag being used in their product...nothing. Some really nice photos of what I'm sure are (hmm, how to express this, eureka!) excessively liberal wannabe bikers fashionably camouflaged. Prob taken by the same guy who takes those...surfer models off the beach and stuffs them into tac gear and I'm to believe their soldiers. A little more on the product and a little less fashion would be good.

I'm sitting here in my BDU pants (real ones! they helped invade Grenada, them not me) thinking fashion is destroying the earth...never mind burning fossil fuels.

The gun was a model 10 FCP-K in .308 (shot beautifully, too), and I remember the guy mentioning that the 10-rd mag was an aftermarket goodie. I didn't pay that much attention to the manufacturer, if he even mentioned it, because I just didn't like the set-up.

About a year ago I saw some Savage-branded 10-rd mags on the shelf in Cabela's Winnipeg. Again, I wasn't in the market for them so I didn't look them over that closely...but I do recall that they seemed to be CRAZY expensive. Sorry I can't be more help.
 
Sharp shooter supply, sharpshootersupply.com out of the U.S. has nine round .308 mags that if I can remember from a buddy of mine that was looking into it for his Savage 10 FCP-K was a drop in for the gun. Not sure if they ship to Canada though.
 
I started with a Savage 10 FP in .223. Loved it except for the fixed mag. If I was buying now I would do the FCP-SR without hesitation. Savage rifle with a 20MOA rail and a decent scope, bipod, and ready to go. Mags dictate overall cartridge length, but for a standard .308 or .223 that should not be a problem, and you can get super accurate loads in .223 reloading 69 or 77 grain Sierra Match Kings.

I'm buying another rifle at some point I was considering the FCP-Sr and the Precision Carbine... money and details...
