Winchester 71 Price Check UPDATE POST 23

It's hard to tell from that picture but it doesn't look like 2.5 from the swivel to the end of the wood on this one. I am wondering if the stock has been cut. But I would have to measure LOP to be sure. Would I be correct in assuming that if the recoil pad on the one I am looking at says anything other than "Winchester" on it that it is not factory?

Just checked my older 71 deluxe and from the rivot point on the swivel to the end of the wood is 2". To the best of my knowledge and a check by a collector indicates it's original and unaltered condition, 95% +.

It has the old original 'Winchester' recoil pad. The sling attachments/pivot points it has are actually 1/2" wide but with a little effort searching, I did locate the proper set of sling swivels.

Got the 71 home tonight. Everything is great. Sling swivels and sling turned out to be original and special order for this standard. Just noticing the rear sight now however. Is this a correct Model 71 rear sight? I am seeing different sights on google images than the one on mine but I don't know for sure. Anybody able to tell me for sure if this rear sight is original? Heres a pic:

That's what mine looks like in post # 21

For the most part, I believe so, although there were some that came equiped with a bolt mounted peep sight.

Well that sucks a little. It's funny because when I shouldered it I immediately thought that the rear sight felt cheap compared to the rest of the rifle. I guess I will just have to order a reproduction rear sight. As for the rest of the gun, I am very happy with it.

The model 71 Winchester in 348WCF is my favorite lever gun/caliber combo. I'm far from an expert but I did look through the printed matter I have accumulated on the 71 and the only sights I see on it as 'factory original' are the one like on mine and the bolt mounted peep sight I've already made mention of to you. It is quite possible there were other rear sight options offered but I haven't been able to find any indication that is so.

No need to order a repro. I think any no.22 rear sight would be correct for your 71. They put them on a lot of Winchesters and they are for sale on Ebay often. The number/letter combo e.g., 22G, 22H etc. only indicated whether the sight was buckhorn, flat top or whatever.

Johnn; The 71s were the least optionable of all the Winchester rifles, as production costs were rising and wages the same, Winchester started taking less and less custom orders and you'll find very few 71s with extraordinary options. Not saying there aren't any, just nothing like the 86s, 92s, and 94s. You must also take into account that this was a depression era rifle as well as WW II, neither one of which was good business for fancy rifles or custom options. More a workhorse rifle time, which the 348 most certainly was. I'm sure Matt74 knows way more about it and can even probably quote numbers and available options.
