So I went to a gun show today, and picked myself up a Swede Mauser.

Original sights, Tally plate, matching Bolt and receiver numbers
The rifle has very little wear and the bolt is beautiful.

What got my attention when I got home was that the rifle has the markings:
1899
WAFFENFABRIK
MAUSER
OBERNDORF A/N

From the German writing and location I assume that this is made in Germany.
I did some light reading, and discovered that a few (50+thousand) Swede Mausers were in fact made at the Mauser plant in Oberndorf.

Did I just find the proverbial Jackson Pollock at a yard sale?

The Oberndorf Mausers made in 1899 and 1900 are a nice find, but not really that scarce. Actually, there were about 40,733 made, serial numbered between 19121 and 59967.

There was also another run of 5000 OB M/96 rifles, dated 1900, serialed from 1 to 5000. These were m/96 rifles made under contract for the FSR Civilian shooters, but most of these ended up taken over by the Swedish Army.

Check the stock and handguard numbers to see if they are original as many stocks were changed.
