Well if you are just looking for a top folder then all you need is one of those cheap ati stocks on an 870 or 500. If you want the overall look, get a franchi affinity, add a spas 12 stock (Very expensive if you can find it, then no guarantee that it will fit), and build the "scary front end" that got the spas 12 prohibited to start off with. Sure the bolt lug will be different, but all the big clunky front end on the spas 12 was for was to allow you to take a semi auto shotgun and pump it when you were using ammo that couldn't cycle the firearm properly.

Who was in charge of making the prohibited list? I'd like to meet them one day just to ask them if my theory as to how they chose the list is correct.

you guys are really hung up on the top folder part. Spas 12 came with different stocks. The distinguishing feature that makes them look like a big nasty bag of f#*k off is that forend. None of the pumps have that look. They just look like pumps with top folding stocks to me. Plus, the Spas is an auto/pump so to really get the vibe you need to start with an auto loader.

If a Spas were legal and available I would still buy an M4 :)

If you really want a shotgun like a SPAS try taking off anything that makes it easy to carry, load or use then - voila, you've got a shotgun as good as a SPAS

Coolness factor >> practicality

The frame for the hand guard gives the shotgun a nice look, the rest of the gun is just a simple semi auto shotgun.

Jurassic Park: failing to use top-folders practically for 20 years :D

Before I knew much about firearms, I had a british friend in high school who's father showed us his SPAS-12. I was pretty awestruck being all of 15 at the time.

Now I just wonder whether it was a dwatt or not . . .

Add a big forend, and no matter what it looks like, you still have a ridiculously badass shotgun. I'd have to agree, if you really want the Spas vibe, I'd rather have an auto-loader with a fixed or telescoping stock, over a pump with a top folder.

A piece of sheet metal with holes SPAS-style in it would be a simple drill press and file job. A suitable foreend and overfolder, and there you go.
