Is the ruger sr-556 legal in Canada?

Yes, it's legal, it's an AR variant and restricted class in Canada. As for who has one in stock, not sure. I'm sure someone will know & post for ya!

Cheers

You'll have to import them from a broker like Irunguns. IIRC, it isn't (wasn't) exported to Canada because ITAR restricted anything with 5.56 roll stamps from being exported but has since slackened the rules somewhat and folks here have been able to import them. Not sure if it has slackened enough that dealers here can import them in volume for resale.

Check out IRUNGUNS (sponsor here) as I know they were importing them. Theoretically any ruger importer SHOULD be able to get them although with the current state of Ruger being so behind, as well as the panic buying in the States, it may be a bit of a wait.

from what i understand ruger does not want to export
so your option is black market like i run guns .com
Its a nice looking gun.

Whether Ruger WANTS them to be exportable or not is irrelevant, as Ruger needs to have their US State Department registration valid for selling their bolt guns and .22's up here anyways, as long as a valid export company - that is registered with the US Department of State - is applying for the export permits properly then it can be done.

Before it was impossible because the military calibers (7.62x51 NATO, 5.56x45mm NATO, .50BMG etc...) as well as certain features (short barrels, telescoping stocks) were not exportable. However those "banned features from export" expired or were dropped and you can get those items with no issues as long as the export paperwork is completely filled out correctly and submitted for export.

Or it could be a new guy at the office approving export permits and he's gonna get a very rude awakening one day :p

The term "black market" would refer to underground illegal sales. IRUNGUNS is a legitimate and reputable company, not to mention a sponsor. I'm sure if anyone here said your company sold firearms illegally, you might be slightly offended.

Right now given market conditions try www.gunbroker.com or one of the other auction sites..... There is a few out there but with Ruger having over 1,000,000 firearms in backorder status stock will not be there for for some time. We can always import one for you.... Just keep us in the loop.

Best Regards,

I was sitting with one of Rugers reps for dinner a few months ago and they intend to bring the SR556 to Canada. I don't have any time frames but we were discussing the topic.

This is the second time in two years that Ruger has been back ordered a million guns, what a great position for a company to be in - as long as they're smart enough not to dump the family jewells into expansion, they're doing great.

Last year Ruger gave its shareholders a $3 per share extra dividend just because business was so good! I'm looking forward to another great Christmas gift like that, plus I'd love to get a SR556.

SR-556 stands for Strum Ruger 5.56x45 NATO. Since there are regulations in the USA for exporting 5.56 stamped rifles, the SR556 is rare in Canada. If available, you may need a end cert, just like some of the rifles at Wolverine Supplies

The export 'ban' on military adopted calibers expired sometime last year; it was not renewed. That's why Wolverine has the Barrett .50's coming in, and Tactical Imports has the Serbu semi 50's coming in as well. You'll see pretty much all the major brand firearms we're getting now are marked 5.56 instead of .223 or .223 Wylde.

AKA: More cool stuff for us!
