Leupold Standard Rings vs Dual Dovetail

With DD's there's no chance of windage screws backing off over time, and they look a little cleaner IMO. One could argue they are better for hard recoiling calibers as well, though not the case here (.270 Win) I'm not a fan of standard/redfield style bases at all.
 
I've never had a problem with the STD windage adjustable bases.

I have a QR set on a 416 but also STD's on a 338 and 375.

If they're installed properly they work. I've seen them where there's a gap under the rear ring and the windage screws don't have full contact.
 
Dual dovetail is SOLID. The standard rings with the front dovetailed, and the rear is windage adjustable- reliable unless a screw somehow becomes loose. I like the dual dovetail better. I think weaver bases with grand slam (steel) rings are fine too.
 
I've migrated away from standard Leupold rings. Although I still do own a few on rifles that don't get used much I won't be buying anymore. I've had enough of them come loose to cure me, and thats why the few I have left are sporting Red Locktite.I used two 30mm front rings to make a set of DDs the other day, after throwing away two rears.

The double dovetail is never going to come loose. Something that is a great benefit to me is that I can mount a scope farther ahead, which can be the difference between needing a longer stock or getting hit.

If removeing the scope often is in your plans, you're better off with something different than either.

In that case, between the two options you listed its an easy choice. DD all the way. There are other options that work fine as well, and the finer nuances of mounting and fit may come into play. The windage adjustable set-up trades a fix for one problem for another potential problem. If you don't have the first one, there's no good reason to put up with the second.
 
I bought the Leupold DD 2-pc base for my Winchester M70 Safari Express; the back part of the base doesn't fit. The holes on the M70 receiver are really close, like 1/4" center-to-center. What the hell?

Is there a special base specifically to fit the Safari Express!?

Yes, I believe the large magnum actions require a different set of bases than magnum actions.
 
The Express takes a different rear base. A M70 STW that I have that was originally chambered in that caliber so has the close hole
spaceing as does another that was originally a .300 H&H. I have it narrowed down to those calibers that have the slightly longer magnum ejection port. The .458 also has the H&H length port even though it doesn't need it. That does put it that much closer to being a Lott.
 
I have used the standard Leupold rings on a few dozen rifles, including four 7mmstws,five 7mmremmags, two 300RUMs,a 300WBY, a 338x8mmremmag, and a 375H&H, without a single issue, and without using loctite on the windage screws.
