This is my 4th 870 and the one I decided to finally keep and not trade off... so of course there is an issue with it. I have never had an issue with an 870 until this point.

The guy I got it off here on CGN somehow managed to forget to inform me that it wasn't extracting properly. Thanks for that.

So.. the shell will stay stuck in the chamber after firing, I have to ram the pump forward hard to properly snag the rim of the shell and yank back on the pump to extract and eject. They are Mirage Clever shells that I have used in 870's for years so I am sure it is not the shells themselves that are the problem.

I am wondering if it is a bunk extractor or maybe the barrel slot for the extractor to merry up to is not milled out enough...? anyone else have this problem? is there a place where I can purchase a new 870 bolt with extractor and all? or just a new claw?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks

I did have the same issue with my 870. I polished the chamber and ordered a new steel extractor from brownells...the extractor on my express was some sort of cheap slag metal and was quite worn so it could have been the issue. Since the polishing and new extractor she runs like a charm. To polish the chamber I just took some extra fine steel wool, wrapped is around a brass brush and chucked it in my drill. I did notice quite a difference in smooth / shiny finish after the procedure.

If the op's is an express model agree 100%

If you get an extractor, you may as well get the spring and plunger at the same time (about 4 bucks each) I am waiting for a complete set from Brownells as we speak. If it is an aftermarket short barrel I definately would suspect the barrel. I bought an aftermarket barrel (DA grizzly) and the extractor slot was out of position just enough that the extractor would hang up.

Nothing to do with the extractor

It a tight or rough chamber that is your problem, hone abit and she will cycle smooth :) I would still buy a Police milled extractor anyways but it will not solve your issue.

this thing has fixed many 870s ;)

Brownells is one place I have seen them when I was having this issue....they are like $50.00 for one hone so I made the call an went with steel wool/brush trick. It is no doubt a great tool for the job....your call on whether the cost is worth it or not.

I also used a little Fliz on a cotton bore mop afer to final polish...all I know is I haven't had an issue since.

save your money and just wrap steel wool around a dowel. Put a screw in the end to chuck it in a drill. I add some honing compound and a bit of oil to lube.

Total cost 57 cents and I've done half a dozen barrels already with no sign of wearing it out.

That hone shown is a ceramic ball hone. They are also used to hone nikasil and chrome plated engine cylinders. The ceramic is very hard. Probably don't want to over do it if one decides to go that route. They will cut through nikasil plating if one isn't careful so they will no doubt change chamber dimensions if a heavy hand is used.

just liek the ladies like it, lots of lube and in and out with not to much sideways movment :)
the steel wool trick works well , but its messy, takes along time and you have to keep re applying the weel wool to the brush.
but i do alot of stocksung stuff so to me the tools are worth it, in fact i think i may order a new set mine are getting a little worn.
Ive done about 100 norinco bbls and about 30 express since last summer.
the chambers on the nork are better then the express, but the bore is bad, the express is the otherway around.
That said i have a 2012 police magnum we got in just for some photo op stuff for parts we make, and i was horified at the chamber!!!!!

Well, I use the finest grade steel wool and wrap it so that it won't even go into the chamber. I use a dowel that is nearly chamber size so it's not a floppy mess. Then slowly start the drill turning and feed it in. It packs down to a perfect very snug fit and you can gradually increase the drill speed. If it's messy just use less oil. I have mine packed with chromium oxide polishing paste and I just used a little oil on the last one I did and it wasn't messy at all. If the steel wool is packed very tight it takes very little time. Maybe a minute or two and I can have a chamber polished smooth as silk.

For you the ceramic hones obviously make a lot of sense. I am also guessing that my method would not work so well for major burrs or chatter marks.

Oh, I also made a smaller one with a long dowel for polishing the whole bore. That works slick too. Takes out little rust speckles and makes the inside look like it never fired a shot (or sat in a barn for decades)

I assume one pre-drills the dowel as to not split it, it being end grain at the end of the dowel and all.

We have some Truck Mag polishing compound around here somewhere that I think would work well...? any thoughts? ... so I would use gun oil as well as the compound?

Cheers Lads,

Trev
