I'm looking at getting a lever action hunting rifle for big game hunting. I was looking at the Marlin Model 1895SBL 45-70 gov't, want to know if anyone has one and can give me their opinion on it or maybe suggest some other large bore lever actions to look at? I'm mainly planning to use this for hunting Moose, Elk, Cariboo and Bear defense.

you might want to look at the 22" brl model as this one would be the most practical for all round hunting, especially with a low power scope. I do have a guide gun and the cowboy model and use a 444 with the 22". For off hand shooting the cowboy is it.

ain't nothing that will come in front of it that it won't drop-just check your purchase as I hear that QC at Marlington is inconsistent...

Quality control seems to be much better these days; I haven't heard of any Marlin lemons lately. I bought an 1895 GBL last summer, and it is fantastic. It gives me about 3" average groups at 100 metres with the Skinner Sights I put on it and the cast loads that it likes. I'd be confident to use it on anything, anywhere at reasonable ranges. I'd say you couldn't go wrong with one of those.

I owned an 1895gbl, I reluctantly sold it to a very good friend and replaced it with a Rossi Rio Grande in Stainless, I would hesitate to buy either online as I think QC is questionable on both, I prefer the Rossi because of the lighter weight.
