I have no doubt this has been beaten to death but I didn't see anything during my search.

I just got home from finishing my Hunter Education Course, where the instructor specifically said WMU 65 is shotgun only.

I can't find anything in the regulations stating caliber restrictions or firearm restrictions for hunting small game in WMU 65 unless it is during big game season. If you don't have a valid tag, you're limited to 400 ft/lbs of muzzle energy or no larger than #2 shot. It was always my understanding that the 'shotgun only' rule applied only for big game hunting...deer, bear, moose and elk.

The instructor still insisted it was shotgun only, that I could not use a rifle for coyote any time of the year.

Is he wrong, or is just about everyone I know hunting coyote in Eastern Ontario with .223's and .243's etc... doing so illegally?

Yes, your instructor has his head up his a$$. Shotgun only for deer, centrefire rifle is ok for small game, including coyote, but not during an open season for deer. Some municipalities have regs stating nothing over .275 in calibre.

It's sad when instructors give out wrong information. Deer hunting in wmu 65 is shotgun only. Coyote (small game) in wmu 65 have no caliber restrictions. The .275 caliber restriction does NOT apply to wmu 65.

Some municipalities have regs stating nothing over .275 in calibre.

Such a BS rule. Go out and use your .270 without issue but so help you if you want to use your 30-30.........As to your question, 9.3mauser gave you the correct info. As glang mentioned, check your regulations as some municipalities are not dumb and will let you use whatever.
