Today i was shooting Sellier & Bellot slugs with my 14" nea on rem 870 express and ran in to some problems. The fired hulls would not extract, so had to use cleaning rod to push it out the chamber. I noticed a small bulge on the side of the brass where the extractor sits.

I took the barrel out and compared it to my rem 18". The pics below show the issue, is anyone else seeing this in their nea barrels?

I will get pics of the hull tomorrow, was so pissed i left the fired hulls at the range. I have 10 more to shoot tomorrow, will also try win and fed hulls.

The same s&b slugs extract fine with 18 rem barrel and also in my mossberg with out a bulge in the brass.

This seems all to familiar:HR:

Have you shot any other shells out of it yet? I had the same problem with mine and it was because there was 1/2" of park inside the chamber, I had to have it polished to be able to cycle any spent hulls.

try some high brass magnum loads if it is over cut then it will leave a nice imprent on the brass, much lie kthe wau a handgun will do to brass on a 1911 or glock if cut wrong.
make sure the barrle is seated in all the way, i have seen this happen if not seated down far enough, and there is enough slopp in an 870 to have the bolt lock i nan fire and not have the barrle seated all the way.

Looks like they tried to cut the extractor slot in a one pass operation resulting in too much unsupported chamber. The rem slot would need two cuts requiring more machine setup time.

Obviously remington got the finer points of this worked out sometime over the last 64 years of making them.

I will try again tomorrow, range was full so not shooting today.

I think your correct to much unsupported chamber as i have shot 50+ in my mossberg and 20 in my 18" with no issues.

I would like to hear from other nea 14" owners to see if they have the same extractor slot.

i have the same problem. doesnt matter what shells i use. the s/b low recoil slugs are the worst offenders. it will actully rupture the case at the void.

Thanks cdnstig, makes me feel even worse that i spent $115 to have the barrel fitted by a gunsmith and bead sight installed.

That sucks. Maybe you can flatten the barrel and use it as a shooting plate.

Guess that wouldn't work either because they usually cheap out on metal quality too. :D

I have had enough of nea crap.

Putting 18.5 police barrel back and selling 870. I have ksg coming this week.

Thanks a bunch nea for all the crap you make.

Has anyone bothered to talk to NEA?
I had an issue with one of their first run barrels and they were easy to deal with and quite accommodating......this is obviously a mistake and I'm sure they will make it right.

Can-Down

The problem i have is that this is not one off, others have same high cut extractor grove. I have also put $115 extra because of other issues i had, so needed a smith to fix it. NEA may replace barrel, but from others experience its going to be another barrel with fit issues and high cut extractor grove.

Do i spend more money getting another barrel to fit, pay again for bead sight and still have extractor issues or just forget about this and not loose any more money.

I am going to suck it up and not spend a cent more sending this crap back, i have lost enough money.

I have learnt that you get what you pay for and i should have gone straight to DLASK.

It seems to me like the extractor cut is a mistake in this run. What I'd like to hear from NEA is whether it's a mistake that was not caught in quality control or is this a departure from the Remington 870 design for some reason?

I'd at least want my initial purchase money back. Obviously the extra work your smith did might be harder for you to recoup..... what did the smith say about the slot? Did he even notice it?

Forget replacement! Get a refund. Unless you can't be bothered and don't care about the money? I just don't get it.....I found them easy to deal with and I got my money back quickly plus the gave me some store credit online for my hassle.

You've got nothing to loose talking to them and they need to know about it.

I will email them and ask for refund, but i didn't buy this direct from them but from one of the board sponsors. The smith didn't even look at the slot because it was issue of lock and unlock that was the problem.

Email them sure and let us know what they have to say!
Will the dealer you got it from refund you?
NEA has had their share of problems but from what I've seen they are willing to address them and make things right!

Contacted Dealer i purchased from, they will issue full refund. I was really execting them to say exchange but at least i get something back now.

I really wanted this barrel to work, but I guess nea have a lot of issues left to resolve.

Rant over :)
