Ear plugs for hunting

Never used when hunting. Although I don't hunt waterfowl (right now). Is it probably doing some damage to my ears? Probably but I only at one or two big game animals a year so I'm not going to worry about two or three shots a year.

I have hearing loss in my left ear. My Doc says the left ear is more exposed than the right ear when shooting right handed rifle. Think about it , your head is quartering to your right a bit which protects your right ear a bit from the blast and makes the left ear slightly more exposed.

I don't wear anything when hunting but always at the range.

Yep. Totally. In my time in the Service (back when the Earth was still cooling down....:rolleyes:) the whole issue of eye/ear protection was completely un-heard-of. We just put in our range time etc without questioning anything. But it was DEFINITELY my left ear that would ring like Hell after any extended firing, and it's my left ear that only functions at 50% today......:(
 
No way you can forfeit hearing in dense bush. there, it is 50% eyes and 50% ears.

I would gladly pay good money for a quality "hunting" earmuff, if I somebody kindly made me aware of its existence. By "hunting earmuff", I mean a low profile muff that is comfortable enough to wear for long(er) walks, reliable in all conditions, true amplifying powers and reliable when it is called for... I have seen none that fits this bill i.e. designed for hunting.
 
At the rifle range, always. While hunting, never. All human senses are required for hunting, if not utilized, than your defeating the purpose to hunt as a hunter. Personally I love hearing the shots, especially sitting in the duck blind. To experience the sounds of everything while hunting is just as important as seeing. When I played team sports I sacrificed my body to win, I've also done the same with my hearing while hunting....................to win.

I have both industrial hearing loss and recreational shooting hearing loss added to the mixture.
When plinking or shooting gophers/varmints/pest control I now wear plugs.
When shooting in the gravel pit I also wear hearing protection as well.
I have not tried the electronic ear muffs, but had a set of reactive type that where supposed to
close upon a loud noise, but they where not fast enough to allow for shooting a rifle at the range my ears would still ring.
Follow the directions of what ever the manufacture says.
Ear plugs (foam type) generally provide for 15 -20 dbs of protection, but that is better than nothing.

if i used a center fire rifle for hunting i certainly would use electronic hearing protection. but i hunt mainly with muzzle loader. the bang from them is not as bad it is more of a WHOMPH than a bang or crack. for shooting at my parents place with 22's not on my rugers. but on my sons savage rascal with the short barrel it is quite loud for a 22.
 
Purchased some Peltor Tactical 6-5, approx. $90 from Acklands. They seem to work well but have not hunted with them yet. They enhance sound with an adjustable knob on each muff. They are comfortable to wear all day. I wear hearing protection for any engine running. It is nice to hear those grouse talking in the bush. Take it from an old railroader, Tinnitis is a #####. When I wear protection around noise it does not aggravate the condition.
 
Sonic Defenders ear plugs they claim to alow sounds below 85 db and block any thing higher and have a small plug to make them block every thing same as a regure plug.

nope dont care my ears ring constantly anyway and thats before i started hunting dad did not think of hear protection when he let me work in the shop grinders and air tools take a toll also the fact that the windows viberated from the sound system in most of the car he owned may have played a part

Are they really pricey? Yes, but at 23 years old, not going deaf from duck/deer/turkey hunting is worth it.
I'd like to be able to hear my kids say "Dad" someday.
 
had a 338-378 weatherby with a muzzle break always wore plugs and muffs at the range,shot one moose with it without hearing protection and sold it shortly thereafter lol......now i know why everytime i shot it at the range id have the rest of the shooters come over and say what the f%$k is that!

I hope you spoke with your hearing specialist before you decided this was the route to take.
If you are right handed and shoot right handed then your left ear is being fully exposed to the blast from your firearms.
I say this from experience and several specialists have all said the same thing and suggest I use some form of hearing protection
while shooting or hunting, even with one shot....
I very seldom suggest strongly advice , but this one time I will make the exception, consult your Doctor, consult your hearing specialist
before taking advice from anyone else on this subject.
You only have two ear drums and you can not reverse the damage that is done.
