Hey guys thought I'd get some advice about a Savage in 308. First, its a 26" 10 twist...what's everyones best guess at where to start for 1000 yard shooting....the faster 155s or the higher bc 185s??? Perhaps in between? Secondly, what's the most common neck bushing size for savage 308s and lapua brass? Thanks guys!

I dont have bushing dies but dont you just measure your fired brass at the neck and subtract 2 thou or so

and you should probably make sure your neck thickness is consistent, or you wont have consistent neck tension

thats how i understand it,

Iv been looking into bushing dies for a while but have been putting it off because I dont want to turn my necks yet

Check the thickness of the neck, multiply that x2, add .308 bullet diameter and subtract .002". Short answer .334" bushing.

What if you don't have a loaded round to measure? My Lapua brass has .014" neck thickness so multiply that by 2=.028"+.308 bullet diameter =.336. subtract .002" =.334"

Depending on the wall thicknes of the neck on your brass you might want to orders bushings +/-.001 too.

For 1000 yards, forget the 155s. Palma shooters use 155s at 1000 only because they have no choice. They are required to according to the rules.

You gotta go with 185 VLDs. Most FTR shooters are running 185 Berger VLD or similar. Some guys are experimenting with heavier.

The problem with 155s is they don't have the BC to stay supersonic at 1000 unless you drive them at ultra max pressures from a 30 inch barrel. The 185s can make it to 1000 supersonic at modest pressures.

For bushing sizes it will depend on the brand of brass you buy if you don't turn your necks. Lapua have thick brass in the neck (about .014") compared to Winchester (about .012") those are the only 2 that I can mention off the top of my head, but we can assume it varies from brand to brand.
