I thought she was an 1891 Argentinian but the "Modelo 1891" is not on the side wall. The DWM side wall mark means the rifle was made at or after 1896.

Made sometime after 1897 probably. Possible Spanish Navy issue? Does it have a letter prefix in the serial number?

If not, it could be a ZAR contract...

Are there any visible stock cartouches? Or have they been sanded out by bubba?

FOUND IT!....:dancingbanana:

Sincere thanks  - the "trick" was to get that word "fraktur" !...:yingyang:

Truth be told, this one was a bit of a mystery (i.e. manufactured without a crest, and with a non-standard "uncrowned fraktur" marking) cou: - but thanks to CGN :canadaFlag: , we got it figured out !

Long story short :stirthepot2: , it looks like I have one of the first 200 from an 1897-manufactured batch of 2,000 carbines of the 1895 Mauser model-style (see chart entry # 5):

That's a very useful chart. Years ago I was trying to find some info on a C serial ZAR/Chilean that did not seem to fit the mold. It was a very early c prefix, one of the first 200. I reached a dead end and the rifle went into the vault for years. With that new info, I will pull it out and take a fresh look.

Thank you for the info.

Sir - I have serial #6691 right here lying across my knees as I write this. Mine was captured from the owner, Piet Huijsen, at the Battle of Korannafontein, in May of 1901. It figures in Goerge's book on 'Carved Boer Mausers'.

Now all we have to do is to find the other 1998 of them to have the set.

Best

tac

PS - if you email me, I'll send you pics of the other markings that have been lost on your sanded stock... :=(
