Hi Guys, I am fairly new to Milsurps and the love affair has just begun......
I am working on building and L42A1 clone of sorts using a bastardized Savage No 4.

I have acquired a reproduction scope mount with pads and my question is, that I am looking for a gun smith who has experience installing these mounts. I know that they required machining to fit the receiver properly.

I really enjoy the look of the old style scope mounts, but I also want a rifle that I can actually shoot, not just a wall hanger.

Pop over to milsurps dot com, take out a (free) membership and start pillaging that Military Knowledge Library.

LOTS of papers and notes in there by Peter Laidler, retired top Armourer in the British Army. He built those things and wrote everything down.

Excellent photos as well of original rifles. All free.

Too bad you didn't get a L42A1 when they were imported. One time thing and the Brits destroyed the rest except for some sold over there.
Bought a L39A1 and a L42A1 plus a L59 cutaway drill rifle.
By the way, the reciever will need some machining to mount the front pad.

I hate you..........HAHA Yeah I was probably 5 years old when that happened.
I have been through the Peter Laidler's on-line series, awesome stuff; so much info there. However I think it is still out of my ability to mount it on my own.

I think you're better off looking for an original No4 sniper that has been bubba'd and converting that. That or just shell out for an L42. One sold recently for 4K here in BC.
Make a habit of going to the gunshows and being the first in the door. Over the years I've found several No4 snipers that have been bubba'd sitting on tables unrecognized. Sometimes there's not much left, but even an action without the bases is better than nothing.

If you're really serious about the project PM me and I can make some other suggestions.

Don't know it this helps but I picked it up off of "Accumounts"...... Well Beater I guess the true question is are you up for the abuse again?

I should also let you guys know that I did order a S&K mount for a back up if this is all for not.
