on our range here in UK last Sunday. The happy [and rich] owner cranking magazine-load after magazine-load of Rottweil slugs down range while the rest of us stand and dribble with sheer envy.

Actually, anybody here in UK who takes up Practical shotgun can have one, but it's not 'quite the thing' on the gun-line at the local shoot, doncha know ol' bean.

You are allowed to have a shotgun in the UK?

I'll assume that you are asking a serious question here, and not starting an in-the-hat-crapping conversation at long distance. Yes, twenty-times World Champion George Digweed and around two million more of us have shotguns. Many of our junior shooters, and Olympic shooters, are also world champions, too.

One license = as many single and two-shot shotguns as you can afford. The VEPR here, however, is classed as a Section 1 firearm, like a rifle or handgun, and is subject to more stringent rules. Because of the way that shotgun licensing works, nobody really knows how many there are - but half a milion is a good estimate. Practical shotgun is very much alive and kicking, too - our club is one of the few in the country right now with NRA RCOs qualified to run the comps, but it's catching on fast all over. We have around forty club members who practice this particular facet of shot-gunning.

As for a regular SxS or over and under shotgun - anybody may have one simply because he or she wants one - for any kind of legal shotgunning activity. After application to the county firearms & explosives licensing office, it usually takes about a month to get the license back, after the local Firearms Enquiries Officer to you has checked out your secure storage. If you are a law-abiding citizen then you cannot, in law, be refused a shotgun license. If, for some reason, you ARE refused, then it is up to the police to prove WHY you are not allowed to have a shotgun.

Here in my club in UK - and please note that the video was shot at the 100 and 50m range in our club, forestalling your next question - 'are you allowed to have REAL guns' - I'm about in the middle range of gun-ownership numbers with my little collection of fifteen rifles and three handguns. I can't post images here, but my pal Diopter can do it for me if I ask him nicely - we both shoot Swiss. I have three Swiss. There are at least five people in our 270-strong gun club with around forty or fifty real live bang guns that fire real bullets. :=)

Details of my little collection of guns might follow if anybody here is interested, but I'd opine that nothing that I have would really get any of you guys excited.

tac

PS - if anybody really has any doubts about gun ownership in the UK, please have a look at Bisley NRA on their website to see a line of 140 target rifle shooters in action, many of them from Canada...And also have a look at my Youtube channel - tac's guns - that might just convince you. The Patron of the NRA is HM Queen Elizabeth II, BTW.

You can if you have land to shoot on or club, if not then ita 12ftlb air rifle max.

Not so, Sir. Anybody of legal age [18] may have an air rifle up to 12 ft lbs. Anybody of legal age who takes the trouble to apply for a Section 1 Firearms Certificate may have an air rifle of more than 12 ft lbs. As for hunting rifles, well, a look at the British Deer Society site will put you right about them, and a look at the NRA [UK] will put you right about any other kind of rifle shooting here in UK. If muzzle-loading is your thing, then the MLAGB is the place to look - with its own dedicated ML BP range at Wedgenock, and the more than 1500 other ranges countrywide will cater for anything else, like the HBSA, VAA, the BPRCA and the UKBRA. If .50cal is your delight, please note that the UK branch of the .50cal Shooters Association is said to be second only in size to that of the USA. To back up that assertion, my shooting pal Ewen is the sole importer into the UK of Desert Tactical Arms' series of rifles, and the HTI [the .50cal version] amounts to half his annual sales.

Have a great day!

Thanks for the explanation tacfoley, I was under the impression that pretty much all guns were outlawed in the UK. But basically pumps and semi auto shotguns are banned right? Or can you still own them but with magazine capacity restrictions?

And I THINK you have have "regular" sized pistols as long as they are single shot and/or revolvers?

Some areas in Ireland I believe you can have pistols..."regular" ones a bit more easily and not at all in Scotland (where I heard ANY projectile other then a bow you need a "license")

Also heard there is a limit of how much ammo you can have at home? Overall and/or per gun? Is reloading legal?

My question for you...is EVERYTHING registered? Other then paintball/airsoft and pellet guns (under what you consider a "gun" in fps)

As with most everyone who does not live here, you've forgotten that the UK has a long heritage of sporting prowess with guns of all kinds - as I pointed out, there are almost two million shooters here in UK, and MANY custom rifle builders catering for all kinds of rifle shooting. Thousands of furriners come to UK every year to engage in sporting shooting - deer or target , and in 2010 over £2.5 BILLION was added to the country's GNP from shooting and associated industries. The recent UK Gun show at Stoneleigh - a two-day event- attracted almost 100,000 visitors, making it the world's second biggest gun show after the US Shot Show in LA.

Shooting Sports UK/The Shooting Sports Council [a government-sponsored organisation, BTW] gave our club almost $100,000 last year to improve our facilities - the results of which can be seen on Youtube under tac's guns - new range facilities. Shooting is the second-largest growth sport in the UK.

Any and all shotguns that shoot one or two shots are easily obtainable, as I pointed out in my post. Semi-autos are also there to have, but either have a reduced capacity from a pinned magazine, if you need more, as in practical shotgun sports, then all you have to do is to apply for a license under Section 1 of the Firearms Act. For some reason unfathomable to ordinary Joes like me, a one or two shot shotgun or ANY smoothbore gun, is NOT classed as a firearm, but one that shoots three or more, IS a firearm.

So to ease your mind - here is what we CAN have here in UK, a country made up of FOUR other smaller bits, remember [this is important to hoist onboard, as you'll read] -

Shotgun license -

1. ANY smoothbored shotgun, ancient or modern, cartridge or loose-loading [muzzle-loading - as in Brown Bess, Civil War re-enactment and so on] that fires one or two shots. Up to TWO INCH bore in the case of a punt gun, for instance.

Firearms License -

2. Any rimfire rifle or carbine, no matter what it looks like, in .22LR, .22WMR, .17HMR or whatever - no matter how it works.

3. Any centre-fire MANUALLY-OPERATED rifle or carbine up to and including .75cal [in the case of double rilfes and so on] This obviously includes ALL the manually-operated biggies like Barrett, Steyr, MacMillan and the other Canadian biggies, DRS and DTA bull-pups and so on.

4. ALL muzzle-loading Black Powder rifled or smoothbore handguns.

5. All muzzle-loading black powder rifles or carbines up to .75calibre.

6. All cartridge-firing black powder long arms up to and including .75calibre.

Any antique BP firearm for which you have to make your own ammunition is exempt the Firearms ACT -UNTIL you want to shoot it - like a Snider, for instance. THEN it must be registered as a Section 1 Firearm.

7. The last category is a strange one, as it came out of the handgun ban - the so-called long barrelled revolver or pistol. Centrefire or rimfire handguns with an overall length of not LESS than 24". It sounds odd, and looks odder, but the barrel MUST be 12" long or longer - the extra bit is usually in the form of a permanently-attached 'counterbalance' from the grip. If anybody emials me, I'll send a pic to you that way. So we have Ruger and Taurus LBRs in .22, 357/38, and all the .44s. Volquartsen make a spiffy and very high-priced Ruger model, and Iver Johnson make a very nice M1911 with a 'moderator'. The sport of gallery psitol took over from IPSC and Police Pistol, and has well over a hundred thousand participants.

HOWEVER - please note - in England Wales and Scotland there are VERY FEW modern era cartridge firing handguns of any kind. they were baned in 1997 after a school massacre in which sixteen 1st grades children and their teacher were murdered by an a handgun-armed paedophile. There ARE, I'm told, about a thousand handguns of 'historical interest' held under Section 5 of the firearms Acts. Section 5[a] enables you to own it, but not to shoot it - Section 5 entitles you to shoot it, under supervision, at one of seven authorised ranges in the country where such antics are undertaken. Having commanded troops amred with millions of pounds worth of guns during my 33 years as a soldier, there is no way on earth that I am going to be supervised by some spotty youth who counts my cartridges out and empties back.

THAT is mainland UK - Northern Ireland has it differently, as do the Crown Dependencies of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Al htree told the Westminster gubmint of the day to go p1ss up a rope, so in Northern Ireland you can still have ANY handgun you want [no 4" barrel restriction like you have], and, unusually, depending on your profession there, you MAY get a CCW. There are currently around three thousand civilians who carry a handgun on a daily basis.

The Isle of Man still has a thriving handgun sporting following, and the Channel Islands not only have handguns, but semi-auto centre-fire rifles and carbines, banned here in the rest of UK since 1988. The UK has a number of manufacturers of s0-called straight-pull variants of modern black guns.
I hope that edifies you all somewhat.

BTW, the DCRA and its shooters are frequent visitors to the numerous annual Bisley shoots...

Well, I tried hard to explain, but obviously I failed. The guns you show are the only MODERN cartridge-firing handguns we can have in ENGLAND, SCOTLAND and WALES. NORTHERN IRELAND, the FOURTH part of the UK, told Westminster to go pound sand, and took the brave step in 1997 of ignoring the Westminster government edict to ban all handguns. They have their OWN legislation in Northern Ireland. So you can stil have ANY kind of handgun in Northern Ireland if you are a member of a gun club.

Scotland is still part of the UK and is part of the large island usually called Great Britain - ALL the laws I tried to explain in my long post that apply to England and Scotland and Wales [usually referred to as Great Britain] apply the same to Scotland - obviously. It was in Scotland where the 1997 Dunblane Massacre that started the ban actually took place.

There is a limit on the amount of ammunition that you can have at home - my limit is 600x308, 600x7mm, 600x7.5, 600x6.5, 1200x38/357, 1500x.22. I can 'manage', since I reload, like 90% of us do. Only the serious deer hunters buy ammunition, after all, they don't shoot a hundred in a day, as I often do, since I also shoot four or five times a week anyhow.

Please note, too, that the gun laws in THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND [RoI] - an independent and sovereign nation in its own right - are totally different to those of the UK. I am actually the president of the Vintage Classic Rifle Association of Ireland [www.vcrai.com] and have another agenda there whilst wearing THAT hat, but that is outside the scope of this post. Interestingly, the RoI has adopted about 90% of the Canadian gun laws - go figure. Again, I tried to explain, but I'm finding it difficult to do so - REAL CARTRIDGE-FIRING MODERN HANDGUNS in MAINLAND UK - and that EXCLUDES Northern Ireland, which is located in the top part of the island of Ireland - are prohibited firearms, UNLESS you have the special and expensive Section 5 permit. 5a allows you to have a firearm of historical or technological interest, but NOT to shoot it. 5b enables you to shoot it under supervision - something that I am not prepared to do.

See above for my answers.

Also heard there is a limit of how much ammo you can have at home? Overall and/or per gun? Is reloading legal?

See above for my answers.

My question for you...is EVERYTHING registered? Other then paintball/airsoft and pellet guns (under what you consider a "gun" in fps)

Yes, EVERY Single Section 1 rifled firearm that you acquire is registered, by number, make and name, on your firearms certificate, also called an FAC or 'ticket'. That's how they know that every handgun was handed in or deactivated back in 1997/7/8.

Every obsolete calibre fiream that you have that you manufacture ammunition for, because that's the only way that you can shoot it, is also registered as a Section 1 firearm.

EVERY firing replica BP firearm is registered as a Section 1 firearm if it is rifled, or as a shotgun if it is not rifled.

Propellant is only sold on production of your license, same with primers - they have to be primers that you would ordinarily have to reload the guns that you have. I don't have a .223, so I can't buy small rifle primers, as an example.

Black powder is licensed.

Guns of all kinds - including airguns - can only be sold face-toface - same with complete ammunition of any kind.

You CAN buy bullets and have them shipped to you, but you have to provide details of your license before they'll send them.

Every air gun over 12 ft lbs M/E is also classed as a Section 1 Firearm, and subject to the same laws as if it was a .50cal MacMillan.

Please don't get me started on Airsoft.

Every foreign-made firearm that comes into the UK that is not from a CIP-signature nation is also subjected to proof at either the London or Birmingham Proof Houses.

Every moderator is proofed.

Every gun that has its barrel threaded to take a moderator, if not done at the factory, has to be re-proofed.

I am a target-only shooter, therefore I cannot take any of my guns into the field and shoot game - as well this means that I am prohibited from having soft-point or expanding ammunition. The penalties are severe - 5 years jail for possession of a single bullet or complete round of ammunition that is not on my 'ticket'.

Game shooting, or 'deer-stalking' is HUGE business here in all parts of the UK, and has the same basic gun-licensing laws, but with different conditions attached, since you are out in the public domain with a firearm. There are many locales where a moderator is compulsory, especially at night - and yes, we CAN shoot all night. See the BASC or British deer Society websites.

There is,of course, a lot more to it, and you'd really have to do some reading to find it all out. Me, my fingers are worn out now.

You are all very welcome. I hope that my posts have either soothed your minds about the state of shooting in the UK, or scared the almighty s**t out of you. Either way, shooting remains a huge part of life here. Out of the 270 or so members in my little club, about 1/3 are game shooters, maybe more. As I noted, a PM to me will get you pics.

NRA Affiliated clubs in mainland UK - NOT Northern Ireland - note also that many clubs who only shoot small-bore rifle are members of the NSRA [National SMALL-BORE Rifle Association] and NOT the NRA. Great post and many thanks for clearing up a lot of misconceptions (a lot of my own) about firearms ownership in the UK, mainly that people could own and shoot them  I remember seeing a pic of a person shooting a SPAS12 with a short mag and very long barrel and being surprised that it was legal to own there.
