hi can some lead me the right direction on a longer range load whitetail 600 yards i was thinking 168 grain bergers would h4350 be a good powder........plz pl share your knowledge...i have a new cooper! also would you use nickle plated brass in a highend firearm? im worried about nickle flakes thx a bunch

Nickel brass wont be an issue.

I plan to use nickel cases in a custom built tactical rifle in 280 rem. Some lots of brass will flake, others will crack at the neck. Most of what I have used, hasn't had any problem at all.

You might want to try the new super high BC Accubonds in either 150 gn or 168 gn. I understand they are now available in Canada, either would be a devastating load for whitetail. Powders would run in the RL 22, IMR 4831, IMR 7828 ranges for best velocities.

Does anyone know where i can find these accubond long range bullets in canada?

They are not even readily available in the US yet and many people are speculating the BC numbers to be exaggerated. If you are looking for a high ballistic coefficient bullet best bet for now is the 162g Amax, with an actual G1 BC of .599 as tested by Brian Litz or the 168g Berger with an actual BC of .617 Both those bullets need somewhere around 1800fps (some say less) to expand. Run the numbers and see if you will have that kind of velocity at the maximum range you want to shoot then start load development.

I didn't have much luck with the nickel cases. I would buy 280 rem federal blue box ammo, work on shooting technique and fire form at the same time. I've tried a lot of different powders, and R22 has worked the best for the heavier bullets.

I have had the best luck with R-22. As for the new Accubonds, I have spoken to several dealers, and none of them have received the new Accubond, or have been told when to expect them.

Neither the A-max nor the Berger expand, they both more or less "fragment" from my experience. From the animals that I have killed with either bullet, I have only found fragments and never a core from the bullet. Don't let this take away from the bullet perfomance, they both fly very well and kill like crazy in close or at long range. If either fly well in your .280AI be confident using either on game.

If I had a .280 AI, and I don't because I own the Improved .280 AI (7mm RM), I'd try the 154gr Hornady SST.

well i can also get the improved 7mm RM the 7mm STW.....but it would be alot heavier alot more recoil....and alot pricier to shoot,i dont mind all that, but my kid will want a very nice caliber one day! And the 280ai is a pretty sweet frickin round with not alot of recoil.....and i hate trimmin!! Thx all ya Gents

I am waiting on a 280 AI myself, haven't even seen the dam thing yet. But I have most everything here already. I will be trying Reloader 22 and the normal 160 Accubond, 154 Interbond and 160 Partition. Which ever one flies the best will get the nod.

Please dont hunt w/ a match bullet!

x10000000000!

The A-Max is also a match bullet. They are not made for hunting or consistent expansion. The bullet may explode before it gets in the vitals or it may punch through like a FMJ. Using one to hunt would be ignorant knowing the possibility of wounding an animal.

I agree with c-fmbi try the new Nosler Accubond. Or maybe one of the Barnes LRX bullets they are available in both 145gr and 168gr.

Iv never heard that the amax 162 didnt perform....everybody that has used it on whitetail has had outstanding success,i know its a match bullet but alot of ppl are using it for whitetail! everyone claims it fragments, you wont find the core,But have never heard of bullet frags not penatrating the vitals......If you have any hunting experiance with the 162 amax can you please share your results! thx so much everyone

There's plenty of comments online about them penciling through like a FMJ same with Berger VLD match bullets. I have no experience with them and I'm sorry if my opinion hit a nerve. If you decide to use them then I hope your deer die fast and are full of meat. But myself, I'll stick to the Barnes TTSX.

I respectfully disagree. I have hunted with Sierra Matchkings for years from 30m out to 600m with excellent success. I have also used the Amax on a few deer again with no issues. I have used the Berger VLD, no issues.
*** One match bullet definitely NOT to use is the Lapua Scenar, they have a different bullet construction and don't fragment or expand. They stay together and end up in a "J" shape.***
