Ear plugs for hunting

Every time your ears ring you have done irreversible damage to your hearing. It usually does seem to get better but the damage is done. Next time and next time it takes less and less noise to make them ring, to reach a pain threshold, and even to affect your balance. I know this from personal experience and lots of research on the subject. Then one day the ringing stays permanently and you're hooped for the rest of your life.

You will never regret getting and using trail cameras.

I have a range finder which I've never had a reason to use in a hunting situation. It's fun to use to try to learn to estimate distances though. I tend to shoot at pretty close ranges though, I'm no TJ Schwanky...
I know to each their own, but I would not use a trail camera for one main reason, and that is, it will take the mystery away from what is out in the field.............. I perfer to physically scout at a distance, not to disturb an animal that i may what to persue. As for range finders, I've downed over 160 big game animals, my longest attempt and kill was 300 yards..............hence, can't justify a range finder or needed one for any reason.
Oh yes, I forgot about two more dependency gadgets, celluar telephones and GPS.................never used them either. My forefathers must of had some very lean years of hunting without all of these high tech electronic gadgets. As some people will have their heads down texting, mine will be upright settling the reticle on a big buck.

l agree with Track, to many gadgets being used, taking the sport out of hunting.
As for ear plugs, use them at work when qualifying indoor range, use them outside for the rifle range, but not when hunting, like to ear what's going on around me, but to each their own.
Practice Practice and more Practice at different distances to get it right.
And yes, l have harvested my fair share of game, and none have run away.

Nice to hear. Just ordered a pair from amazons.com. Great reviews.

Are you sure you ordered it from .com or or was it .ca? I tried to order these Howard Leighs Impacts from amazon.ca ($55CAD) and they added $23 for shipping! So I cancelled my order. Does anybody know who sells Howard Leights Impacts in Canada, preferably in S. Ontario so I can pick them up?

At $88 for Impacts, I will rather to go with Peltor Tactical Sports ($105 Lebarron and no shipping for me). What do you guys think?

I have a GPS. I use it to mark locations in the bush; reference points. Mainly stuff like, "whitetail, Nov 21-07". I also mark really interesting things I find in the bush, like "the elk tree". Or "camp".

Nothing wrong with being able to pull out the GPS and get reference distances to camp.

To be honest, that's all I do with it. I don't know how to use to plot my route or anything, mainly cuz I'm too fkcuing stupid to read directions. I hate manuals and directions. I am not reliant on the device; just find having the locations of kills and prospective hunting spots marked as points on the map handy.

^ @ Track: I find it funny that you refuse to use a few simple gadgets that help, but have no issue with using the latest whizzum Cooper rifles and hi-tech scopes. You should be using a .38-55 Winnie. Lol.

not fond of the peltor s6 , they in my opinion are not as good as the leights .

their difficult to change batteries and the batteries don't last nearly as long.

the leights have a jack in them for comm's if I recall correctly the peltors don't

fit and comfort are equal

MSR Sordin Supreme Pro-X. $374.60 shipped from SRS Tactical (one of the sponsors)
Are they really pricey? Yes, but at 23 years old, not going deaf from duck/deer/turkey hunting is worth it.
I'd like to be able to hear my kids say "Dad" someday.

What I wear and they work great. I added the gel pads though as they provide a much better seal. My hearing is too valuable to worry about the price. I've worn cheaper brands (some mentioned here) that have failed in a situation where there were multiple shots going off.

I have considered MSR Sordin Supreme Pro-X. from SRS Tactical. But what's up with the 18 NRR rating? My passive muffs with 23-24 NRR rating sometimes feel inadequate next to a hand cannon, So how is 18 NRR adequate? Not a comment, just asking.

Not all muffs are created equal. The electronics and seal on the MSRs make a difference. For shooting outdoors they're more than adequate, indoors I'd double up with plugs although personally I'd do that with any muff.

My Coopers are no different than my old Remington 700, they are the same, a bolt action rifle with a different name stamped on them,...........the only difference is quality. I hunt with the same equipment when I started big game hunting 40 years ago. My old compass had been replaced once, and with a new conventional one. I can still find my way into the deep timber and back to the truck, with and without it. I don't want to sound impudent with anything I say, it's just that I cannot see myself fiddling with some tech-electronic gadget. I agree that it is nice to have trail camera photo's of any animal, however; a person is disturbing the area while retreiving data. I personally conduct minimal disturbance in areas prior to hunting.

Now back to the electronic ear/hearing protection. Today my hearing loss is 28% right ear and 30% left ear from hunting birds and big game without protection. I also hear a constant static-buzz. Was it worth it?...............you bet ya!

Same for me. Double up indoors or when plenty of banging going on. Outdoors the muffs alone are just fine.

Enjoy. Looks like a great product. Perfect for turkey, small game, geese and deer.

We will see about that. Obviously no Sordins, but from my research, they would appear to hold their own in the "best entry level/best value" category. Wondering why no Canadian dealer carries them?

....and how about Amazon.ca charging $23.99 for shipping, where their .com charges $9.88 for the same item?! I guess they found out very quickly (like every other exporter to Canada) that Canadians can be ripped off easily. Our Government is incompetent.

Sorry for rant. Back to hearing protection.

Important

Several people have posted
- use hearing protection at the range, but not when hunting, because they like to hear what's going on around them.

Let me reiterate the point- when using electronic muffs, your hearing is greatly amplified.

Only gun shot noise is blocked, and you hear everything else far better, than without electronic muffs.
