Picked up this Hopkins & Allen Ranger No.2 not long ago with the reloadable .22 blank cases.
every shot i fire misses by a few inches, they dont group but fly in a haphazard pattern around any target im firing at.

It has clean lands and grooves in the bore but i think the lead bullets i fire dont engage the rifling properly, do you guys think that turning them into hollow base bullets will solve the issue?

if your not using a heel base bullet it wil not work well the bullet od should be the same as the case od or just a bit under it but do remember these are not target guns but belly guns used for self defense back in the day

If you can hit a pie plate at 3 paces you are probably getting about what was expected of that sort of gun when it was new.

Other than that make sure that your heeled bullets are big enough to fill the grooves if the cylinder will allow otherwise hollowbase might be the best option. The experts here will have bullet advice more specific to your situation.

Short sight radius, poor sights, small grips, and maybe a poor fitting bullet.
If you can hit a 1 ft circle at 10 feet the gun is performing as it was designed to.

i have one of the Defenders in .32 long, cant even hit a paper torso target beyond 4 feet. still fun to just shoot though. on the other hand i have a Stevens 1894 rifle in .32 long and i get cloverleaf's (holes ocerlapping) at about 35 yards. using vintage factory .32 rf shorts and longs in both guns.

What does the bore slug to? I've used 0.312" round balls (50 grs) in mine and it shot well. Just tap it in lightly to the case.

reloadable cases are the way to go now .32 rimfire can be made from .32 short colt(or long colt if you can find any) and .27 cal hilti blanks or you can get them from http://www.hc-collection.com/PBSCCatalog.asp?ActionID=67174912&PBCATID=335271&PBCATName=.32 RF

I'm thinking about getting a mould built for 32 rimfire bullets but i'm not sure what bullet size I should get. I see various dimensions in different places, with bullet diameters from .312" to .316". What is the groove to groove size on a .32 rimfire barrel? Is there that much variation?

id get the mid range different companys and models of firearms my guess it it would vary alot the bullets from H&C are .316 case soft enough i dont see a problem

there is a few mold already out there for .32 colt a bit high priced through and mose are too heavy for short colt/rimfire but maybe getting it hollow pointed would help with that
