Which milsurp to start with?

Oh, boy, so many different answers can be offered.

What part of history do you really like? Which war movie is your favorite? what kind of money are you willing to spend ?

Obvious starters would be a Mosin Nagant (cheap to acquire at the moment, surplus ammo can be accumulated), a russian SKS (same reasons); you must get a Lee Enfield... (of course! actually get many Lee Enfield! Then more! :D )

The list is almost endless...

Lou is right! You could go many many directions!

For me, I have;
Chinese SKS
Russian SKS
Lee Enfield (Longbranch)
Lee Enfield (AIA)
SVT40
M91
CZ858
M14

Enjoy!

Cheers
Jay

There is a new import of Jungle Carbines (I think) - P&S just posted a few. Maybe start there, while they are available. A Russian Capture K98 might be another good option since they will soon be gone again, this time for good in all likelihood.

spoil yourself buy a ross rifle:) i started with a parker hale sporter that was given to me, aquired a NO4MK1 (FTR) bought and sold a few, now ive got a p14, LSA NO1MK3 a carcano 91/24 (100 bucks at a gun show) a sporter mk2, and my 1905 ross MK2

Pick what you like, not what other people tell you. And buy the best you can afford worked well for me, got my garand before they went crazy.

wait a minute he said he is joining a rifle range! The obvious answer would be to start with a svt-40. So he can scare the crap out of the rest at the range. But an sks is a great option, hot rounds flying in every direction. With these 2 rifles you are sure to clear out the range in a hurry. Also get a ross. They scatter when you pull a ross out.

Which milsurp to start with?? Depends.

If accuracy is important: (model, caliber)

Swedish Mauser 6.5x55
K31 Swiss 7.5x55
Ross (any model) .303 British

If you're into WW2

Lee Enfield no4 .303 British
Russian capture K98 8x57

If WW1 is more your thing.

Ross mkIII .303 britsh
Mauser gew98 8x57
Lee Enfield no1 mk3 .303 British

If you want dirt cheap gun that ears surplus ammo:

Mosin Nagant 91/38 7.62x54r
Russian SKS 7.62x39
SVT 40 7.62x54r

Semi autos:

Swed ag42b 6.5x55
SKS 7.62x39
SVT 40 7.62x54r

And the list goes on and on!! Basically once you get one it's pretty hard to stop!!

if you want to start and actually shoot the thing I would get soemthing where ammo is available reasonably cheap.
Your best options are then an SKS, SVT40 or Mosin or a Chilean Mauser in 7.62NATO.

Realize most 7.62X39 and all 7.62X54R is corrosive and that means cleaning.

Also, once you start you will soon end up with 5, 20, 40...

Milsurp rifles have a way of taking over the safe.

That's a big one, right there. Here's a comparison:

.30-06, around $8 for what's in the pic.

7.62x54r (Mosin)? $13 for what you see in the pic.
