Hey Gang,

Just wanted to throw it out there and see what everyone's experience has been with the different brands of .22LR rimfire ammo.

I have a couple rimfire pistols and rifles and they all seem to have their own preferences... A couple years ago I purchased a CZ 452 Lux - a gorgeous rilfe that shoots pretty well regardless, but I think it can do better. So far it seems to like Stingers the best, Yellow Jackets are crap, Golden Bullets do OK, and the standard velocity Win, Fed, Rem Thunderbolt, etc. all seem acceptable for what they are - with the odd dud.

I've heard a lot of good things about the higher-end (and pricier) rimfire ammo brands like Eley and was just wondering what people's experiences have been with them. Are they really that much better? Are they worth the extra $$?

I've been thinking of sucking it up and paying the premium for the sake of curiosity... With that in mind, where would be the best place to purchase premium ammo?

From what I read; Lapua, Eley and RWS.. Although RWS gets mixed reviews - however each barrel has its preference when it comes to different ammo. I have shot some RWS subsonics and really liked the results - kept my 10/22 cycling.. not as quiet as I would like, but without a silencer there isn't much to be done..
 
You haven't tried CCI ammo yet... I find it has the best dispersion of the common brand... Try Mini-Mag solids in your pistols and Standard Velocity in your rifles... Also really like Wolf MT and ME and SK Standard +.
 
Try CCI Std Vel first. Other ones to try are CCI green tag, SK Std +, SK rifle match, Lapua center x. Prophet river is a good place to get ammo from.

My CZ 452 Varmint shoots well with many brands, but with bulk stuff the average group is somewhere between .5" and 1" at 50 yards. With the cheaper match stuff (SK rifle match or Lapua center X) I can get averages well under .5" with 5 shot groups.
 
my cz is very good with lapua target or eley. both are in the $7 box of 50. will do one hole at 50 yrds 5 rnd groups. mini mag is more like one inch. i'm still in the process of try different amo. currently trying wolfe but the headstamp on the wolfe appears to be lapua target.
 
At 100m my Marlin shoots American Eagle copper plated just as accurately as the RWS Target I tried last year.
$22/500 (Eagle) vs $8/50 (RWS).
Maybe with a custom barrel off the bench there would be a difference (I hope so)...but from an off the shelf Marlin shooting off a bi-pod...no difference.

My Savage Mk 2 heavy barrel shoots amazingly well with CCI Standard Velocity.
 
Eley Tenex EPS is $190 for a brick of 500. This isn't something you would want to run through you 10/22. In a match rifle you can see a big difference at 50 and 100 yards shooting higher end ammo. Lapua Center X shoot better in my Anshutz than EPS, however at least one shot in 50 (in the last lot I had) would throw a low shot and the bullet hole looked like a wad cutter where it went through the target. I would use it for practice, but not in a match.

For shooting indoors or 50 yards/m outdoors Eley Club can be made to work if you batch the ammo by rim thickness.
 
My CZ452 Varmint likes CCI Select but at $14.00 that might be too much $$$ for some.
I also have a CZ452 American in Beech. On any given day, the results will reverse using some Lapua Master L.
Increased price does not mean better accuracy.
Cleaning, acclimatizing with ten rounds, and then testing gives a truer picture.
Testing "A" followed by "B" and then "C" will rarely produce accurate results unless using a brand like Eley where they use the same lubricant on all their ammo (if it is really the same but it appears similar).
Some of our BR shooters use Team and Club to condition their barrels after cleaning and use Match for score.
What is good in one gun may be crap in another. My Marlin 39 Mountie likes CCI MiniMags but on any given day, the preference to HP's and Solids may reverse.
With my Anschutz 1813 at our last match, Eley Team gave two scores 1n the 1400's and using Eley Match were 1800+ for two targets. Guess which I will use next time . . .

I tested numerous lots of CCI SV's versus CCI Grenn Tag, out of numerous guns, at 25, 50 and 100 meters... There was no measureable difference... My conclusion was to stick with the cheaper SV's... If I need more, I go to SK, Wolf or Lapua.

Agree with this ! I found little to no discernible difference between Green Tag & SV. A different firearm may show other results. The current production runs of SV seem to be resulting in some pretty good ammo.

I've tried a few different premium brands. Green tag works best in my setup. I wish I could get my hands on some SV as I would like to try it based on all of your opinions.....difficult to find locally. Mini Mag and Green tag are common. The Mini Mag's feed and shoot great but Green Tag is noticeably better. It's also twice the price.

Best 5 shot group @ 50 yards to date.


 
I've some Eley Team and Lapua standard plus, both worked well forme. Check out targetshootingproducts.com, they have a lot of match ammo for pretty good prices.
