Evening all. I acquired one of the Russian refurb 98's that have made their way to some of our Canadian dealer. Beautifu specimen, VERY happy with it...but I have a minor issue :) Engaging the safety on this rifle is NOT possible with the bolt in gun. In order to do so, I have to remove the bolt from the rifle, and with the bolt upside down I can push back the cocking piece a little ways...well, about 3/16", and then the safety will just fall into the safe position! Soooo, I figure I have to shim it or something, but am at a loss and figured I'd consult with the CGN crew before making any uneducated guesses. See attached photos to compare the cocking piece position in both the safe on and safe off positions...note the safe on position the cocking portion of the bolt sits about 3/16" further back. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance all!

The safety lever MAY need to have the cocking piece engagement corner altered or adjusted to allow the safety to cam in and move the cocking piece back easier. The bevel may need to be altered a bit by polishing or grinding. Be careful and go slow only removing a small amount of material at a time. Make sure it is polished smooth. You want to be careful not to damage the detents on the safety as well. Below is a pic showing the engagement bevel that may have to be adjusted. It may be something that you'd want to take to a gunsmith if you don't feel confident doing modifications like this.

With the bolt in the gun and cocked you can see the relationship between the cocking piece and the safety. This would tell you approx how much needs to be removed from the cocking piece engagement corner on the safety.

I should add that there could be issues with the cocking piece to sear engagement surfaces as well.

Maybe the bolt was reassembled wrong...

Taking the bolt completely apart would be the best place to start.

Thanks guys. Goo98, I've dissassembled and reassembled a few times, trying to determine how to correct, thinking perhaps a piece was missed in the refurb, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I think jbmauser is on the right track, I'll dissassemle and take another closer look, starting with cocking to sear engagement. Thanks!

The M98 bolt is really impossible to put together incorrectly so I'm sure you don't have an issue there. It is my understanding that when the Russians refurbed these k98k's that they basically assembled them by grabbing parts from bins and then you end up a mix and match of parts with possible tolerance stacking and the resulting issue you have.

I'd be glad to take a look at it for you but it sounds like you may be a long way away from me since I live in the north west part of SK.

Thanks JB, no worries, you've helped plenty :) down here in old "Boom town" Regina... (That's a funny...booms done nothing for me but increased my cost of living :( ) I'll let you know how I make out, but that cocking piece's safety engagement "grove" seems to be a fair ways away from the cocking lever...like I said I need to bring it out an additional 3/16", pretty much the equivalent to the entire width of the safety's engagement area.

...and not all of the parts in the bins were even from k98k's.

For the money you guys are paying for those RC's, the dealer should really have it fixed for you as it was not sold in good and safe working order.

If the dealer has any spare parts, ask for another cocking piece to try. I have experienced your problem and it could only be fixed by trading cocking piece. Maybe some are from a different model run or something, but there seems to be a variation in the lengths.

If you want to try another safety/cocking piece, pm me your address, will fire one out to you this week.

Fwiw, most don't seem to need any fixing.

This Non Functional Safety error squeaked by Ivan in Minsk, Russia and the Dealer in Canada, only to be found by the new owner. That's warranty. An accident waiting to happen.

That's like selling an optimum pre-owned car with no Brakes! Think of the Children! - ya, I had to say it! ;)
