Talked to an old fella I knew. He said he had one so I went and looked at it today. The slide operates fine, it looks very old(never been refinished). There is no rust anywhere, the rear stock had been busted in half length ways at one point in its life and glued back together.
I never seen one of these while I have been looking so I was clueless to how much. In the state of the gun, he doesn`t plan on ever using it and had said: "can`t take them with me when I die".
I asked him if he would sell, he bumbled a little and said he did not know what it might even be worth. I had $200 on me and offered him $100 to start. He said he would have his wife look it up online to see what they are going for @%&+ darnnit anyhow.
I get home and check on it: Winchester model 06. Round barrel/flat crown/grooved fore end......yeah in nice shape they are going for anywhere from $800 and up. As soon as they see that, I could imagine what they will want...

I seen one with a cracked stock on gunbroker at $500....then again who knows if someone will pay that. How do you negotiate? I didn`t know if I was over paying at $100 for the condition it is in. I think $200-$250 would be my highest but who am I to know if that still is a horrible lowball for a 1906 gun?
 
It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If he knows what it's worth but can't find someone to buy it, maybe he will get in touch with you. It depends on how badly he wants to get rid of it and how much he wants some money (he can't take any of that with him either).

He said he just didn`t know what he was gonna do and that his wife was going to check online tonight. That is when I told him: "I just scrolled through and picked the ones that were close to his". I alos mentioned to him, there are "almost new" ones for a pile more.
 
1906's are the most common of the Winchester pumps . Usually they have been well used . Check the bore . Usually they are rough and/or pitted . Keep in mind that lately Gunbroker prices on anything have been insane . Cannot go by their prices for comparision up here in Canada .

I think he is wanting to have his wife do some checking online first. Nothing good can come out of it. I will leave him alone and keep looking. I had mentioned to him that if he wanted a 22 kicking around, I had a Model 39 and 60 Cooey he could just have. Nope, didn`t entice him. I really don`t think money matters a whole lot to him.
 
American prices don't mean anything, unless you can find a way to smuggle your gun down there. Another reason for hanging around auctions is that you can get a feel for what people are willing to pay for things.
 
Agree, prices in the US have not much in common with Canadian prices... Even more so on gunbroker!

Personally, I tend to stay away from guns that have been fixed (unless they are just about free). Once you replace the stock, it will have lost whatever collector value it had.
