What loads work well in your 30-06?

GoblinXIV I suggest you try to figure out what the problem is, that's making you want to retire your 30-06. This caliber rifle has historically proven itself. If you'r not hitting where you think you should, be more specific in your inquiries and perhaps someone on here can help you. Lack of accuracy comes from a mountain of possibilities. So state clearly what load you are using, the grain projectile, the distance you are shooting, Scope or not, Bolt action or other, Has your rifle been checked for proper bedding, is your scope the problem, Has it been mounted properly, I could go on and on, this is just meant to be helpful and nothing else, try to be more specific with you problem.

Seems as though there is more love for IMR4350 than H4350. I used to use IMR 4350 too, but will be switching over to H4350 due to its temperature stability. also, I have been reading up on some long range target shooting with the .30-06 and H4350 often gets the nod. I guess I am just a curious kind of fellow!

I wasn't having great luck with cold weather and H4350 loads last winter. With max loads and 165s they wouldn't crack 2600 fps out of a 24" barrelled Cooper. When it warms up things are better. I have 400 rounds with 180 Woodleighs sitting waiting in Australia loaded with 56.5 grains of AR2209 which is what ADI calls it before Hodgdons puts it in their own jug. Those do 2700 when its warm and might even be good for something for all I know. Never tried small Woodleighs before, except on paper.

It's because you were shooting a Cooper. :ninja:

On a more serious note, when did H4350 become an "Extreme" powder? Maybe you have an older pre-Extreme lot?

Im was getting 2830fps this winter with 165 sst and 57gr of h4350 with 22" barrel

I can do that with Varget when it warms up, and it was actually faster than H4350 in the cold. Since its warm where I use it it doesn't matter that much.

1899,
My H4530 isn't that old.

I do know my .300s are a phuck of a lot faster, and it renders the whole thing moot. A 30-06 is just a low heat means to an short range end to me.

If you can't do it with a .30-06 out to "normal" long range, say 400 yards or so, then you need more than a .300 mag...or you need more practice ;)

Of course things change when a fellow is a Gunwerks or whatever the marketing rage of the day is fan....

The only reason for a .300 mag is to shoot bigger bullets at the same velocity as a 180gr .30-06 (according to my logic).

I load my .300H&H with 200gr Accubonds to 2700fps MV. Man, those things will shoot end-to-end on a big whitetail!

I shot 80 or so animals with the 30-06 last year, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. What would be the proper amount of practice?

So you can do it with a .30-06 after all! Not that I ever had any doubt in you.

^ 80 animals!? I haven't shot that many in my lifetime.

You need to add the gophers to your totals.

^ 3 shot groups don't matter. Might as well show us a 1 shot group.

Lol..tough crowd in gere tonight!
