What loads work well in your 30-06?

You need to add the gophers to your totals.

No gophers on that tally. The 30-06 was chosen for logistics and barrel heat, but the first worked itself out with the help of a fellow shooter in New South Wales. I'm taking a couple 06s this year, along with a .300 of one persuation or other. I can put it away if it gets hot.

Ah, I see what you mean by "low heat"...as opposed to a "hot round".

And I was joking about the gophers.

I am surprized to see so many people using more than 150 grain bullets in their 30-06. Especially with the "new" bullets these days. All i have shot in my 30-06 for the last 35 or so years is 150 grain. No elk or moose have gone more than 100 yards.

I'm surprised anybody would use a 150gr in a .30-06. 180-200gr for me, but I will 'slum' with 165's for deer and coyote.

I used to be a 180 grain fan but have really grown to love the 165 recently. It seems to shoot well out of most 30-06s and with a high quality bullet is a great choice out to 500 yards. It seems to be the perfect combination of weight, speed and penetration from 0-500 yards and just about every rifle will shoot it well. Lighter weight bullets seem much more finicky.

I rarely bother with anything other than 180's out of my .30-06. Compared to a 165 gr. of similar construction, the 180 has only 2 inches greater drop than the 165 at 500 yards... not enough to bother about in my opinion. I would rather have the extra bullet weight.

I shoot 180's out of my 30-06's, 165's out of my .308s. Same speed, same trajectory, makes life simple and shots repeatable. Practise with one translates to the other.
