Yesterday afternoon my neighbor brought me a DOT 1943 mod.98 and an old smle , from what I googled last night the 98 should make a decent hunting rifle action.

I'm kind of thinking of rebarreling it to a ??? caliber for a deer rifle maybe what do you guys think of these actions seems like some like them.

I've done quite a few hunting rifles over the years on commercial mausers like the santa barbara's parker hales and I like them .

From what I gather these actions would be strong enough for most modern chamberings.

My wife is gone with my son for a haircut and I need his ipod touch for pics so I'll post some later but it's nothing fancy it needs a good cleaning these guns haven't been fired for years and have rust, nothing deep so I don't think there is much pitting .

He said he paid $10 for the smle and not much more for the 98 back in the 50's .

It's your rifle, but why would you want to rebarrel the K98? Isn't softpoint 7.92x57 (8 mm Mauser) ammo available in your area?

Rebarreling may (probably will) reduce the value of that K98, especially if it's in good condition.

Even Russian capture K98's are going for over $600 now.....

Anyway, sounds like you snagged a helluva deal for 2 good milsurps!!!

8x57 with a 150-grain bullet is HOTTER than a .30-06.

With that kind of wallop to play with, there is no point rebarrelling.

I remember the late 1950s, early and mid-1960s, too: Mausers all over the place and all getting chopped.

Problem is that the sporty-izing guys chopped them ALL.

Now there are non left.

If you want something to modify, go on the EE and get another Parker-Hale.

Original wartime rifles are now MUCH too scarce to be modifying.

Please!

Here's a few pics of the receiver .
It has the eagle with the # 63 on a few places and DOT 1943 on top of the receiver .
Apparently it was made at the Brno plant in Czechoslovakia after the Germans took over the armory there .

Smellie I don,t know how serviceable the barrel is on this one and someone already sporterized it the stock has been cut the barrel bands and hand guard are gone , the sights are intact and the bolt has a different SN than the action and barrel which are the same.

.
It would depend upon what the bore was like. Some of the ones that look really crappy can clean up to be reasonable shooters, especially the Mausers with their bit deeper rifling. There is nothing wrong with the 8x57 Mauser cartridge for hunting, but it is just a teensy bit more difficult to find. Most Gun Shops, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware and other larger retailers usually have it in stock, but the smaller stores and country stores carry the more popular calibres. If you can knock something over with a 30-06, you will be able to knock it over with an 8x57 if you hit it in the same place.

If the barrel is good I would have no problem loading for it but if it is toast I seen this thing as an action to rebarrel seeing I started making barrels.

That one's reasonably restorable. I think someone would swap you a sporter K98 that's already had the original finish disrupted or the bolt played with for a resto project. It will never make an attractive sported with that late-war machining IMHO.

If you want to sell it, pm me - I've buy it for the bolt! ;)
