I received an SVT-40 today and I can't remove the cross bolt. I am soaking the left side with some liquid wrench overnight and I will try again tomorrow. My friend bent his SKS sight tool trying to remove it.
What is the left side supposed to look like? I can't really tell what I'm looking at as its corroded.
Is a threaded end supposed to be exposed on the left side?

The bolt remain quite flush with the left side. Take a 5/16 bolt and file a notch at the end to make a cross bolt tool. I never had problem removing them yet.

I will try that. I don't think a bolt will be strong enough though.
Are the threads even exposed on the left side? Perhaps I am wasting my time with the penetrating oil.

The threads are not exposed. Once you file a notch in the 5/16 bolt, you will need to file a bit so the bolt fit in the circular recess on the stock. See the SVT Sticky, in the disassembly section.

Sks front sight tool works as well if you have one. It might mangle it a bit if you have an aluminium one but that's just if you tighten it to much.

Its out and what a chore. I made a tool as described in the sticky out of a 3/8 bolt. By tightening it and loosening it the bolt eventually came free. It was full of dirt and corrosion and I am lucky it didn't snap in two. And after cleaning it we discovered it is a split bolt.
The receiver was really stuck and there was quite a bit of dirt below it. This 1941 Tokarev Ishvek SVT40 has definately spent a lot of time outside.
The barrel is dark and after 30 patches still isn't coming clean as my SKS does. But the rifling seems pretty sharp.
