UPDATED Refinished Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 270

I have two of them in 30-06. I met my neighbour one night when he was coming back from hunting. It was pretty well dark. He asked me to hold his rifle while he opened his car. As soon as I held that rifle I could tell it was a pre 64, even though I couldn't see it. I got him to turn the headlights on and I held the rifle in front of the lights and sure enough, it was identical to mine. I pestered him until he was sick of it and he sold it to me. He didn't know what it was, he just called it a moose rifle.

I recently got one of the new ones, the extreme weather SS with the B&C synthetic stock. It's a fine rifle, very accurate, but it doesn't have the feel or balance of the pre 64s. I don't know why maybe the 22 inch barrel.

It'll look good. You should post a WIP thread in the Gunsmithing forum. We don't see many of those.

I would definitely recommend the Lee Valley products. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Nice rifle, in quite good condition. They make a fine hunting rifle but they are heavy compared to the standard bolt rifles available now. BUT THE QUALITY MORE THAN MAKES UP FOR A LITTLE EXTRA WEIGHT.

Looks very nice. Couple choices for the stock: Rub several coats of Tung-oil or similar product (nothing to glossy) on the bare areas until looks close to original varnish. Or if to much finish is damaged then strip finish with chemical striper without sanding or coming near the checkering. Keep in mind to be considered "collector-grade" a standard-grade 70 would need to be 95%+ condition (this is a personal thing of course). I'd prefer a rifle in condition like yours that I could actually hunt with.

I took the plunge ,,,,sorry in adavance to all the collectors out there, but I like the gun so much its made its way into the hunting section of the safe. Added a Nikon scope, I am looking for a vintage weaver, I passed on one and now I have to find another

I put 6 coats of tung oil on it, removed the front site installed a proper blank added the scope and this is the finished product. The finish is very close to the orginal not to glossy and not to dull,,,,no sanding involved straight chemical stripping

My wife will kill me if she knew I took her decorations of the fireplace mantel....hahah

You have to at least get a good solid Weaver K4 on there and you'll be good to go! I have a 1951 in 30 GOV'T 06 with a vintage K4 that came with it and boy it would be sacrilegious to change it. As for the finish....I hate to sound like a bubba, but you need to make the call that will best keep it original but protect it for future generations (how's that for political?)
