300 blackout looking for a lead that will open up on whitetail staying subsonic.....

i iv been playing around with my 300 blackout......im trying to find a bullet that will open up or fragment while staying subsonic.....is this possible? thx

Allthough - expansion shouldn't be that nessary for a 300 BLK shooting Subs... Since bullet upset for a 220-240gr projectile is a factor (Imagine a long long bullet like that travelling sideways though a animal) - I'd think you'd do fine with any bullet over 220gr thats not FMJ.

HOWEVER - Why would you want to shoot subsonic at a animal? Not like we can shoot supressed up here, and you're giving up a bunch of benifits for no real reason.

well what if i wanna go to yankyville one day.... i have a blackout for a reason,soo you can suppress it! im fully aware its illegal here,but i do travel with my firearms........im just curious on the best ammo on whitetail staying subsonic,I hope that answers your question Any other suggestions?
 
I've only loaded the 208gr Hornady match bullet for subsonic in my AR but can you do something like a 170-180gr Hornady SST or GMX and keep it subsonic? There are lots of options under 200gr. Are you shooting a bolt action or a semi? Bolt action would be easy but in a semi you might have some issues. AA1680 is your friend in a semi with the heavy stuff.
Suputin is the 300BLK subsonic guru, maybe send him a PM. He's done a lot of testing and probably has your answer.

I can't imagine that any typical .308 rifle bullet is going to deform at all at less than 1000fps. Even the SST and Ballistic tips are tough enough that they likely won't open much at that speed. I would say the only way to know for sure is do some testing on wet phone books or the like to see if anything happens at all. You may have to treat it the same as archery, with little to no hydrostatic shock effects and simply putting a hole through the animal in a vital location.

IF you want it to mushroom at subsonic Velocities you have to go lead bullet, not sure how a jacketed hp bullet will do

You need a Soft Cast bullet at 11-18 bhn Air cooled --> for stopping power 247g NOE gas checked bullet is the one you want All ready taken down deer in the USA

its a model 700 bolt action...yes
 
Even pure lead will not expand in a whitetail subsonic. I thought about buying a bolt gun in 300 BLK for hunting, decided against it. Hunters in the US are having problems getting deer to stay down with it, even supersonic, and their deer are pathetic compared to ours. Don't do it, please!
 
Personally, if a guy wanted to hunt big game with anything subsonic, I would reccomend .45 cal, like a .45 colt, .454, or 45-70.

A 300 grain, 45 caliber bullet, at 800 - 900 fps or so, is a proven "medium" big game killer (deer, hogs, black bear, etc), and still a powderpuff to shoot, and very quiet.

What you need is a cast bullet with a flat nose. Cast bullet hunters use them because they cause more tissue damage than a pointed bullet.
