Heavy tripod for spotting scope

Hmmm. Mine does not have a hook, but I'm pretty sure that I could install one....

Chris.

For Manfrotto, it doesn't look like an obvious hook. Here is a pic of the so called "hook" on Manfrotto tripods:

I really like your avatar Brutus ... Airborne ! Big reunion this June 6-8 in Edmonton

I am looking at purchasing a spotting scope and tripod for our club.

I contacted Pelee wings here in Ont and they recommended this

Kowa TSN 663 scope ....................................
Kowa 17 HD 25x Long-Eye-Relief eyepiece .....
Manfrotto 190XB tripod w 128RC head ............
or
Manfrotto 055XB tripod w 128RC head ............

We will be using the spotting scope mainly in the prone position . Do both of these tripods adjust low enough for this ?
Any recommendations as to what model of scope or tripod we should get?

We have aprox $1500 to spend and our range only goes back to 600 yards.

Thanks

Hey Airborne brother!

Regarding that prone use friend, you might want to look at something else for just prone. Maybe a Ewing, Ray-Vin, Freeland, Creedmore.
These are more commonly used for prone shooting conditions, as they are made to be more stable while much closer to the ground.
Someone such as Paul Reibin at Range Unlimited Sports out of Kamloops would be able to give even better advice to you IMO. Myself, I do really like the look of the Manfrotto gear, but really, I'm not convinced they are the bee's knees for long term use on rough/uneven ground on a grassy shooting berm. I think they would be better for table top use or stand-up use at an outdoor rifle range in more casual conditions with a flat & hard floor surface.
To be honest, Manfrotto goodies, I myself believe, they belong with lightweight camera and video equipment under softer use maybe??
This is just my inflated ego talking here btw............;)

Cheers & Good Luck in your quest Chalkriver.

I will second what Brutus said about spooting scope stands for shooting prone. The Manfrotto's will not go low enough to be usefull in the prone postition. If you are trying to use a large tripod from a sitting position during a coached team match then you have all theses ackward tripod legs taking up most of the firing point. There is a rifle team going to Barbados next week for the West Indies Fullbore Championship, I know for a fact team members will be taking Ewing, Ray-Vin, Freeland and Creedmoor scope stands.

On a second note Pelee Wings is having their annual expo in a couple weeks. All the vendors will be there and from what I understand they will have the best prices of the year during this expo. I highly recommend Pelee Wing.

Thanks for the help guys :) I did a little more time on the interweb looking up those brands and I like the look of the Ray-Vin.
