Looking For Suggestions for 1000 yd hunting Gun

Well like the title states, i'm looking for a decent 1000 yd hunting rifle. I was thinking possibly 300 win mag but i'm not sure.

It will be for Elk and possibly other things but probably mainly elk. Also i'd like to target shoot with it so a heavy barrel is a must.

Get a 7mm, or .30 cal of your choice... Even a lowly .30/30... When you see the elk at 1100 yards... Stalk 1000 yards closer and then shoot it. If you are shooting at big game animals at 1000 yards, they should revoke your hunting licence.

The preceding is entirely my opinion.
 
hahaha! 1000 yard hunting gun. Get realistic first, then look at recommended energy for taking down a given species of animal and look at some ballistic.

O.P. very very very few shooters out there capable for hunting Elk @1000 yards! And besides, it just ain't right! That's steel target territory for civilians! Army snipers can take heads off at that range. Suggestion: get real real real good at shooting, hunt at your capability range, prolly under 300 yards! I have a custom long range target rifle in 308, thinking about barreling to 260. Keep us posted as to what you decide on and how you do. (in a new thread). ;)

I cant agree more. When I ring steel at 1000 yards on my home range, it is a 10" plate. The plate never walks or moves, I only shoot it on calm days and have wind flags.

I still miss and would never think about shooting any game at that distance.
 
Whoa... I didnt say i was going to shoot game at that distance, only that I wanted a gun capable of it. Truth be told the only animal i'll attempt to shoot at that distance will mostlikely be a coyote.
 
You can be sure this crap is spawned by some of those "Long range" hunting shows.
Inane at best, downright idiotic at worst.
Learn to "hunt", then your 300 Win Mag will work great, because your shots will be at sane distances.

why a yote? don't they deserve a one shot kill humane death, too?
It's a can of worms, that you have opened! I hope U R man enough to eat it, all ???
 
If you can't garentee a instant or relatively quick kill don't take the shot ... Don't think about taking the shot. I HATE yotes but would never take a shot I'm not sure I could make.

I've seen an idiot take a 500 yard shot on a yote with a 223, pulled the shot slightly and blew the hip of the animal apart. Luckily I managed to get into a more reasonable position and finished the job before the thing got into the bush but I was still a terrible sight ..

To summarize get out of your dream world and start being realistic
 
At 1 km I don't think it qualifies as hunting any more.

I did a poll on here a ways back and 95% of all shots were under 200 yards. Lots of respondents. I should have asked to sticky it. Mods: any way to retrieve that thread?
 
Well, this is one of those rare threads where absolutely everyone agrees that you should forget this ridiculous idea. That alone should tell you something.

If it doesn't, then do a little research and find out how long it takes a bullet to travel 1000 yards. Then stop and think about how far an animal can move in that much time. Then put two and two together and realize that NO AMOUNT OF SKILL can possibly make shooting at a live target at that range...ANY LIVE TARGET...an ethical thing to do.

Take some time, learn to shoot...and with any luck someday you'll be embarrassed you even asked this.
