Confused and dissapointed...

Here's some pickups found over the years.

The one on the left is a 308 case fired in a 30-06 chamber. The middle one is a 7 mm Mag fired in a 300 Wby. As near as I can tell, the one on the right is a 30-06 fired in a 308 Norma Mag.

Right is typical case head separation.

It happens,
Ted

Much as I hate to be a cranky curmudgeon-WHAT part of this is confusing several of our shooting fraternity ???!!!

I can't speak for the above however in my case it was a little stress thrown in with a dozen years of familiarity.....my boy in a rush loading my 308 jammed it up. I cleared the jam and pocketed the round. subsequently he shot at a mule deer buck that was clear to be hit to far back. I tried to drop it with the 270 missed went to my pocket where I have carried extra rounds last 20 years or so and dropped it in the 270. This was the first season I had the 270 having given the 308 for the boy to use. I missed the second time as well but mercifully the kids shot had, though well back, did the trick anyway. Never even knew things were awry until I ejected the round.

The 303 will chamber in a & mag. A few years ago a guy brought a Browning A bolt in 7 mm into wholesale sports. He had fired a 303 out of it and wondered if it could be fixed. I would have been too embarassed to bring it

An acquaintance last fall got his shells mixed up in his pocket and fired a .25-06 AI in a 7mm mag Rem 700.It peppered his face with powder burns and made his right eye bloodshot. Also blew off the extractor. My son fired a 6.5x55 in a .308 Norma Magnum......no harm done lesson learned.........Harold

Along the same lines, at the firing line about 25 years ago a guy was having trouble with ignition of his muzzleloading rifle. Finally one of the other shooters yelled cease-fire. That orange labeled bottle of RS Pyrodex was actually an orange labeled bottle of H414.

Just a little trivia here, but did y'all know that when the US forces were looking for a new cartridge to replace the 30-06 for NATO compatibility they said it must headspace and fire in an 06 chamber, hence the 308 Win or 7.62 NATO was designed to headspace and fire in a 30-06 chamber. They of coarse do not reload and couldn't give a fat rats a$$ what the brass looked like, but were not willing to decommission more than a million Garands in service at that time. So the 308 will headspace and fire with relative accuracy in a 30-06 chamber.
And Ted I really wish you would stop displaying my mistakes on the internet for all to see........................LOL

Just be thankful you weren't bird hunting with your boy using a 20 gauge and you using a 12 gauge...That is a nasty experience that thankfully I have only witnessed after the fact, never in person.

AGAIN I say-what part of this is confusing our members??-why TF would you have a varmint/deer round in your pocket if you are hunting moose/long range deer ??- I know that #### happens-BUT...

Just a few days ago I pulled a 308 brass from a 300 WM chamber after he destroyed the brass and chamber by trying to remove it from the breech with screwdrivers, picks, files, etc..., the kid was trying to say that a local smith modified the rifle to shoot both. I know the smith personally and the kid with the rifle is full of used hay. Idiots are everywhere, sadly most survive long enough to breed.

A few years back I met up with a hunter having issues with an old Russian surplus rifle, he was firing 308 from a 7.62x54 chamber all the brass had been separating at the head, one finally left the case body inside the rifle and he had tried very very hard to chamber another round making a real mess.
