I will soon be acquiring an 870 super magnum that fire up to 3 1/2 " shells. (Comes with a 28" barrel)
I would like to have a tactical set up for it as well.. so.... are there any 18"-20" barrels that can be used with the 870 that will fire the 3 1/2"?
Thanks

Bro seriously bro seriously the 3.5 inch stuff is for like geese, not people, it's just not needed. After a few rounds you'll see that you can get any ol tactical 18 inch 3" chamber barrel and be fine.

Sorry I didn't answer the question haha

I'm not using my shotgun for people, so no worries there..
I was just wondering if there is a barrel 18"-20" that can take the pressure of a 3 1/2" shell.
So thanks for not answering my question.

You can cut a barrel back to 18.5" if thats what you really want. Buy a full length barrel with 3.5" chamber and have it cut back, you wont have threaded chokes tho, bummer.

I'll be saving this thread, I too want to know as well. My friend has an 18.5" barrel on his mossberg with threaded chokes. Its a dream in the duck blind and really doesnt patern much differently. Even with 3.5" BBB. Its alot louder and kicks real bad, but really manuverable and easy to handle in the blinds.

I bought a 18.5" barrel with 3" chamber for 100$. The mossberg made 870 barrels are inexpensive. Its my slug barrel. No chokes

You can easily find the combat length barrel with a 3" chamber (It's not the pressure, it's the length of the chamber), but without going to a cut-down duck barrel I don't think you'll find too many in 3,5".

The super mag shells are really just for waterfowl; I don't know that I've ever seen them in rifled slugs or 00 buck, which is what all the tactical shotgun guys like to fire. You won't find cheapie target loads either. If you re-load I guess the sky's the limit, though.

Thanks guys!
As I said I was just wondering if there was a short barrel made for 3 1/2".
I rarely use anything over 2 3/4, but it would be nice to know I have the option if I wanted to.
If I do ever find the barrel I am looking for I will pm those that said they were interested.
Cheers!

I think you'd have to have one cut down or custom made, carlson will do it if memory serves.

3.5" are rated to a higher pressure then 3" (Different SAMMI spec)

Well yes, the longer shells have a larger powder charge, but the main problem is the actual length of the chamber; you don't want the hull opening up in the forcing cone.

I'd sooner ream out a 3" chamber to 3,5" on a lower-rated barrel than fire too-long shells in a high-pressure barrel.

Reaming out 3" to 3.5" is dangerous as all hell: http://randywakeman.com/shotgun_pressures.htm

2 3/4 and 3 max pressure 11,500 psi
3.5" max pressure 14,000

The main problem is 3.5" shells can generate 2500 psi more then 3" shells by design.

I know, I just said I'd sooner enlarge the chamber, than fire a shell in a too-short chamber. I'm not going to do either, but having the 3,5" hull jammed in the forcing cone with nowhere for the shot to go except KABOOM is certainly more dangerous.

I have factory 21 and 23" rem 870 barrels with rem chokes that were supplied with turkey guns and 3 1/2". I have also seen 18" 3 1/2with choke tubes but not sure who made them. Have you checked with remington
