post '64 Win 94 lever on a pre '64 94 will it fit ???

can anyone confirm if the loop lever off a post '64 rifle will or will not fit and function on a pre' 64 rifle? I've asked some Smith's. One said absolutely not, the other's have said I don't know for sure. One did say there is a possibility. Someone suggested that if the pin hole was enlarged it may work. Please help. I'd like to square up with the seller one way or the other.

I'd have to say no. Numrich lists two different part numbers for pre and post '64 rifles. Best thing to do would be to contact Numrich or search/ask over at the Winchester Collectors forum.

thank you kindly Turf. The Numrich site doesn't answer emails anymore. I signed on with the Win Coll Club, just awaiting the membership approval so I can post and ask the question. cody c, if you are reading, hang in there!
 
I collect Winchesters as well as work on them and I do not believe there is any difference between the pre 64 to the post 64 lever assy. The gun was not redesigned it was merely cheapened and I do not believe that the lever was changed. I could be wrong as I have never tried it but I sincerely doubt that the lever configuration was changed.
 
pics of a pre and post, I do know that the hole for the pin at the tip is just a pinch smaller on the post 64:

Mostly its the shape at the tip, the profile (machined thickness) at the tip is slightly different as well, you may be able to see that the post 64 is tapered down earlier than the pre 64, but Im not sure it affects the action, I could well be wrong, but I'm not sure the hook at the tip does anything, I'm under the impression that just the pin that goes through the bolt moves the bolt back and forth, but again, maybe someone else can verify.

is there a member here that is also a member at the Winchester Collectors that might ask the question on their site? I signed up for membership and waiting for the come back.
 
You could pull the lever off your pre 64 and see if the other one will work, you would have to find a smaller pin to avoid drilling it, but if you can find something temporarily to see if it will cycle the action properly that should tell ya.
 
My Post-64 top-eject W94 lever's pin slot is more kidney-shaped than either of your examples. (mine is same as GPC SKU 302400).

yep, that is if I'm brave enough to attempt to take it apart! I know many many yrs ago when the good guy Jim Moudry at Design Cycle Works said to me "man, you can install the new pistons and rings in your Pan Head all by yourself, I know you can, just dive in there and do it"! So I did! But, this is a Winchester, not a Harley! I just don't know! Still waiting for the membership approval on the Winchester Collectors site and will ask there. Hang in there.

You've had the lever for a few weeks now, you didnt want to send money till the end of the
Month and now its till you can get it to a gunsmith, If you don't figure it out in the next 10 days then send it back and I'll put it back up for sale.

No sweat man, she'll be in the mail tomorrow. Back to you. I don't wanna have it laying on the shelf wondering. As I said, I'd pay ya at the end of the month when my pension cheque arrives and when we know if it will fit! I can offer to save mailing costs, "if" you wish to sell it to another guy, I can ship it directly to him from here. If not, she's coming your way tomorrow! I guess your patients has run out, I don't blame you!

It would impolite for me to comment on or discuss the details on an open forum how your idea of payment has been. I believe I mailed it out about a three or four weeks ago.

Ten days should be enough time to find a flat balde screw driver and disasemble your rifle to see if it works, if not, send it back, and Ill post it in the EE or on ebay or something.
 
sorry cody, I couldn't make it to the P.O. today, it's all packaged up and ready to go. I will get there for sure one day this week. There is no Smith around here that will take in a job and git on it right-o-way, it's just a waiting game. My last project sat a local Smith's place untouched for 6 years, I finally went and got it recently and sent it to a Smith in Victoria B.C., less than two weeks later, it's done and ready to ship back! I asked this Smith for an answer on the question, but he didn't know, as he specializing in other work than 94's.

EDIT: it's in the mail as of yesterday.
