A friend picked up some miscellaneous reloading supplies and these were in the stuff. It is a necked down .308 case shortened to 1.520", bullet size is .284. Can anyone tell me what it is supposed to be?
 
Interesting... I had a look through Cartridges of the World 11th edition and the only thing close is the 6mm BR Remington, which uses a .308 case shortened to 1.5", then necked down to 6mm, but there's no 7mm/.284 equivalent shown and I coudn't find anyhing of a 7mm/.284 flavour elsewhere in COTW either. Would there happen to be any dies for it in the reloading stuff? If so I bet they're from CH4D as they probably have dies for calibres than haven't even been invented yet!

I think Barnes shortened the .308 case down to many sizes, and then necked it up and down.....

my books are at work, but I'll try to look it up when I get back on Friday.

google is coming up short.

You might be on to someting there. I know he did a 458 x 1 1/2". I was thinking maybe one of the JD Jones "Whisper" cartrdges but COTW didn't show anything, and I don't think he uses the .308 as a parent case.
 
Yep, it's a 7 BR and was originally chambered in the Rem XP 100 as a silhouette cartridge in the unlimited class. I do believe it was Elgin Gates and cohorts who dreamed it up, from the 6 BR which of coarse doesn't have enough bullet weight for IHMSA to be reliable on pigs or rams.
 
Interesting, thanks guys. By looking at the stats on this cartridge, I would now like to find the rifle that they belong too. Sorry, not offering any prize for the winner, just kudos....
 
Technically it's not a 6 BR necked up because the 6 BR uses a small rifle primer and those are obviously large rifle. But it is a derivative and dimensionally a match except for the primer size.

The 7mm BR uses SRP in factory guise. most people resize 308 or 243 cases because they are hard/expensive to find
 
The original cases had to be formed from special 308 cases Remington once provided for that purpose. Factory formed cases then became available for several years with proper head stamp, etc. Was extremely accurate cartridge in the XP-100 pistols and Wichita pistols. Shoots very well with cast bullets also. we shot thousands when we were doing metallic silhouette shooting.
