Pizzed off.

I bring it out to the range to finally really stretch it's legs, and on the second shot, something pops. I know my first was a reload, but those were all made awhile back (and barely compressed IMR 4895 in a .308, I may add.) More interestingly, the second shot was Federal Tactical 165gr. IE should have been gravy for this rifle.:confused:

Just as I'm packing I realize something is rattling in one of the mags. The ball bearing for the extractor. f:P:

Dagnammit... :HR:

As you can guess, as I attempt to fix this on the bench (had the range all to myself all afternoon)... The effen' bearing goes FLYING out the opening into the grass. f:P:

Anyone know who (or what) can fix this?

Cheers fellow nutz!

P.S.

I'm incredibly happy my life does not depend on this Savage rifle.

To add:

Part # 12N and 12M seem to be the culprits, according to my Savage manual.

<SUPER EDIT!!!>

Seems a fellow CGN'er will come to my aid with a spare bearing! :dancingbanana:

Yeehaw!

Head to your local bicycle shop and ask them for a couple of 1/8" ball bearings. That is the replacement size BB. Better if you can go one size up to 9/32 but 1/8 is what is "stock".

I bought a used Stevens 200 that didn't extract worth a damn. Turns out someone made that ball bearing from scratch with a length of rod and an bench grinder.

I was not impressed.

You can ask Jerry at Mystic Precision, he might stock them. I think I bought one from Brownells in a bigger order.

I looked at my Savage 110 earlier and bought some spare parts for it.

ht tp://www.brownells.com/schematics/Savage-/110-111-112-112BT-Top-Loading-sid335.aspx

That included a spare extractor, spring and extractor detent ball bearing for my Savage from Brownells.
I also bought a spare firing pin spring (mainspring). They can get tired over time and cause intermittent ignition.

I subsequently had a cartridge case fail in my Savage, the vented gases in front of the case web above the feed ramp dislodged the extractor, detent ball and spring from the bolt.

They fell into the blind magazine. I considered myself lucky that I was able to retrieve all three of them and re-assemble back into the bolt without losing any of them.

If I was less fortunate, I would have needed my spares.

I was very happy with how the Savage design handled the gases exhausted by the case failure, much better than some other designs.

If your gonna shot a savage you better pack some spare parts and a tool kit.:p

Shot over 4000 rd from 3 stevens actions this winter in AZ. Only problem was forgot the key to triggerlock and had to 'improvise'

First shot in a savage 16 (22-250) many yr. ago resulted in escaping gas rearranging the ext./and related parts. Ball and extractor were in the mag. Turns out the load was for a 50gr. bullet and a 69 smk was seated. Not the guns fault. This could be a similar situation. Mark

This ones a bit strange, I lost a ball bearing doing a bolt head swap a while back and could not find it. I gave up looking then went back to loading for .270 win I think, when I got to the bottom of a box of 150 vld's I find a ball bearing..weird I think to myself. So I try it and it fit, now I'm baffled about how it got there, but the box was open on the bench so I carry on. A couple weeks later I found another in the bottom of a box of 80 vld's that I know was sealed so it didn't come from anything of mine. So anyway thanks to Berger I guess??? I'm starting to collect them as spares.
