I've ignored all posts on 22 AR's previously.

Want to improve my skills with the rifle platform and am curious as to which is the best ar 22? Want to be able to put real components on it to mimic my real ar. Flat top, PRS stock, my own handguard. Nonrestricted would be nice but not a deal breaker as any shooting would be at a range anyway.

I am aware that there are conversions with bolt groups and such. Let me know.

Thanks

Ruger SR22 - not an "AR" but looks like a black rifle.

Non-restricted, reliable, made of all metal, lots of add-ons, large cap mags, looks great

M&P 15-22 is the only 22lr AR variant that actually functions like an AR. (Controls wise)

BHO works like on a AR. It is the only one that does......

You can swap trigger parts etc. to match you centre fire AR.

Unfortunately the buffer tube is not removable, and the hand guard is proprietary as well (although the HG does have standard size rails)

You could go with a dedicated 22lr upper for your current AR lower. The only difference there is the BHO is actually a long follower on the magazine. So when the mag is removed from the rifle the bolt will snap closed..... That and the upper will cost more than a dedicated 22lr AR.

I don't reccomend the CMMG conversion kit. The twist for 22lr is usually 1:16 not 1:9/8/7.... 22lr is not the same bore size as .223/5.56.... So accuracy is going to be shot pattern(ish) at 25+ yards. At least that is my experience with the 4 I have owned/tried.

My opinion is worth what you paid for it.

I bought a CMMG upper and customized it so that it matches my Stag AR in .223. It is close to identical in look feel and weight. I bought all the options and particularly recommend the stainless bolt assy.

I owneda M&P 15 22.
It was a decent unit it ate almost all ammo except some federal wildcat I think was the name.

I would buy one again.

I have experience with Mossy flat top (Model 715T), but my AR-15 experience is limited to high quality airsoft.
My airsoft gun is an all metal HK416 replica, the only parts plastic on it is the pistol grip, SOPMOD stock, AFG2, and the rail covers, so the Mossy felt very plasticy, because the gun is really a Model 712 in a plastic shell. The safety on the 715T uses a push-button (cross bar?) safety and the mag release is rotary, similar to the AR-15's safety. The 'buffer' tube of the 715T is commercial sized from my understanding (The 715T I used had a paintball CTR stock on it), the grip is A2 patterned and NOT changeable. The front rails are also not changeable, but it is railed, I'm not sure but I think the side rails are removable. I don't think I have to explain the customizability of the actual AR-15 many people here.

Mossberg 715T: $340 SRC gen.III pro HK416: $520

Agreed. I have the SR-22 and can't say enough good things about it. It's a solid platform, non restriced, ultra reliable, has more add ons than a Honda Civic and groups like a champ.
For the low price of $600.00, it's the .22 of choice.
Yes, it's not an AR.. but it's a solid choice for a reliable .22

Why are people suggesting a tarted up 10/22?
If a guy wants to get in training with a Glock are you going to recommend a Ruger .22 pistol?:HR:

Get a good quality dedicated .22 upper or spend more on .223 ammo/reloads.
If you are thinking of a .22, you may want to look at airsoft for certain training too.

This is a gret idea for a way to provide a realistic training experience between 22 and 223

Because he also said:

Whiich would rule out any .22LR upper...

I hate to admitt this but a dedicated Chiappa .22 upper was the route I ended up going. The thing is super reliable, relativly accurate and affordable. It came as a"M4" look-alike and I built from there.
It got my daughter interested in AR's so win-win for us. She wanted it to look more like mine so....
POF 12" predator rail with side rails milled off to fit her a bit better,
Fake can installed over the 16" barrel
and armacoated to her taste with Eotech.
The bolt does snap closed upon removal of mag though, but not a dealbreaker for me.

I agree. I have an SR-22, and although it's a rockin' toy...it is NOT an AR trainer. Albeit it weighs more than my AR, and has similar ergonomics....the manual of arms is not identical to that of the AR.

I like the idea of a dedicated AR upper, especially the true .22lr barrel....but I don't like the cost of an additional upper.
Would something like the CMMG kit damage a .223 or 5.56 barrel shooting .22lr through it? If not, I can't justify buying a dedicated upper & barrel in addition to the conversion kit.
