I have a new M14 action with a brand new barrel on it that was chambered in Canada and I’m getting misfeeds as you can see in these pictures. I thought maybe the scallops at 5 and 7 oclock were too small until I compared to a barrel from a real GI M14. Everything looks right but obviously something is off.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
Any advice?

It does it regardless of the magazine. Ammo is new IVI.
I've been seating the bullets shorter to compensate but that's not a proper fix.

Both left and right side in the magazine stack hit outside the scallops and get trapped there by the bolt as per these pics with NATO IVI ammo.

Picture on left is a Real GI M14 - Picture on right is mine with the misfeed issue. You can see where the copper is hitting just outside the scallop.

Compared to mine, the scallops seem rotated too far to the right. It could be the camera angle however.

Where does the round get hung-up when it is feeding from the left?

It's hard to see from the camera angle but the top picture is showing where the bullets are hitting the barrel. They are caught up in the above photo just outside the scallop and right on center of the scallop. You can clearly see where the copper rubbed off at the 5 o'clock scallop on the bottom right picture. It seems to catch about half the meplat on the edge of the scallop.

It is certainly not a barrel indexing issue. The scallops are right where they should be rotation wise. There is a scope on the rifle so the camera is peeking from the side and it makes the rotation look off, but that is ok.

Both the 2 top pictures were jammed by racking the action and locking it open - inserted the magazine and then let the bolt go. I definitely did not ease the bolt forward.

I'm beginning to wonder if somehow the magazine is positioned too low relative to the centerline of the barrel. Or maybe the scallops are not deep enough or the angle of the scallops are too sharp.

the top edge of the feed ramps Look very sharp are they shaving brass ?

Did you change spring guide rod ?

is spring guide rod upside down ? it will hold mag lower

ps I have fed flat points in a M305 with a .200 diameter flat nose and no miss feeds

Yes the edges are quite sharp and they do bite the ammo just a bit. Maybe if the edges were not so sharp I wouldn't have this problem, but the barrel will need to be removed to get in there with a die grinder or dremel tool.

The op rod guide is in correctly. It's got a sadlak in it.

One other thing you could check is that your extractor is moving correctly. I had the same thing happen to me when I put wolf springs in my bolt, it would not pick up the round property and bind up in the same spot as yours .Good luck keep us posted.

i think you're overindexed.

Feed ramps do not determine if your barrel is indexed or not. For a barrel to be indexed properly, the gas system should be square up with your receiver. If the barrel is made properly and everything is timed properly, then your feed ramps should be centered too.

However, it is possible to have a properly indexed barrel and still have the feed ramps to be misaligned from the cut of the splines used on the gas cylinder or for the gas cylinder to be out of alignment with everything else on the barrel.

I had a Norinco barrel that was under indexed based on the Gas cylinder to the receiver and yet the feed ramps that seemed to indicated that the barrel was overtightend because they were mistimed in the opposite direction of the GC splines. This rifle was replaced under the dealer's warranty. I'm not sure how these mistakes happen in the manufacturing process or how often, but if you go to the m14 forum there are two threads where this occurred on Springfields. One was a scout sitting in a sage stock. No amount of indexing will fix this problem.

Hopefully the splines and ramps are timed correctly and the barrel is over indexed. This would be relatively easy to fix.
Point to take away: You cannot just assume a barrel is out of index if the feed ramps don't line up.

I was really hoping some M14 guru out there would have the perfect answer. It's definitely not a timing issue, everything lines up perfect.

If I use Federal American Eagle ammo it works fine because the OAL is like 2.712, but if I use IVI or some other cheap stuff with an OAL of 2.772 it jams up every time. I just run them through my seating die and set them back to 2.712 and they work fine after that - but I shouldn't have to, plus it breaks the crimp.

I'll check out the ejector spring though, that's worth a look. It's a good one and that could be the problem. I'll remove it completely and see what's what.

is your recoil spring guide original or a replacement?
i believe the mag locks into it.have you tried another mag or recoil spring guide?

I have not tried a different one, but I like the idea. I'll have to track one down to test it though.

The one I have is a Sadlak so I would like to believe there is nothing wrong with it.

I have tried other GI mags and get the same results.

Make sure your gas prorts are aligned properly I had a similar issue on mine and found out my gas system was not fully on. I had my gas system unitized and the plate was not flush to the gas system.

It is a timing issue that you are experiencing. Try to make it to a clinic and get it adjusted or beg Hungry or the Doc to fix it.

Since you appear to have a grasp of this "timing issue"... Please explain in detail before I make the 6 hour drive to Borden/Barry.
