Bout 2 years ago I picked up a Vanguard on a whim. I really didn't need it but always had my eye on one in the wood /blued version.Plus I wanted a 257WBY to play with. This one isn't the new s2 version. I got it home ,ripped it apart, tuned up the trigger a little and bedded the recoil lug and last inch of barrel in front of the rose wood tip. Then I made up a bunch of test loads. 4 powders,3 shots each for a total of 12 loads. So after 2 years of aging in my safe like a fine whiskey, I finally got it out shooting yesterday.

Here is my 3rd load in!!! Lets just say that when I shot that, any thing else after it didn't matter!! For a light whippy sporter barrel...meh I am happy and you wont see it in the EE forum...it measures .530 center to center...shot at 100 yards..

I am so abosulutely kicking myself that I didn't jump on the $349 clearance that WSS had on Vanguards in .257 a year or so ago!!!!

Glad so see that you are happy with yours.

I bought one about two months before they had that sale in 30-06. When I saw the sale prices, I almost cried. But instead, I bought another, a .243 with the wood stock, for almost $200 off.

Got the same rifle (wood sporter 257) during the first hour of the WS clearance. $420! Probably the best deal I've ever gotten on anything. Like the OP says, it is an absolute tack driver for a light barrelled sporter. Fired the first three shots during sight in through the same hole! The gun is sub MOA at 100 yards anytime with 100gr Sierras, although I'll be experimenting with Barnes and hopefully some GMXs this summer. The Sierras don't seem to hold together well on impact at that velocity. Now I'm waiting for another sale, hoping to get a synthetic Vanguard in 7mm Rem mag.

Which bullet and powder?

117 grain hornady interlock with a nice charge of h4831 and touched off with a cci mag primer..

Now I see that the vanguard s2 is out in a synthetic model,in 240 WBY...I really hate tupper ware stocks but it might also be fun to play with!!

I had issues with the 100 grain sierras blowing up if they hit a deer inside of 200 yards, went to the 120s and they work great

Love the sound and smell of that powder when burned through my .257Wby ;)
The Vanguard line is an under rated firearm for the money imo but then again I'm not much of a gun writer.
Very Good for the money product and they do shoot too.
I will say they are not for everyone though, the stock is a little odd feeling with that hump on her and at 8.5 pounds she
is a tad heavy, but I can deal with that knowing it will hit what ever I am aiming at out to 300yrds with Factory ammo or reloads.
Tight Groups and Good Hunting,
Rob
