I have just bought a norinco m14 and had a question about the loading for it. I am using Hornady 155 gr amax bullets with 40 graind of IMR 3031. I am using Military brass. My lymen manuel says total lenth with bulletr should be 2.800 in lemgth. My question is it seems that the bullet goes past the neck of the case, is that ok? I know the bullets are bowtailed but i was always taught to keep the bullet above the neck of the case.

I think what he means is the base of the bullet is seated past where the neck flares out inside the case. ie...the base of the bullet is in the shoulder area and not just in the neck. I've actually wondered about this too.

As bullet length increases, this becomes more and more common.
As long as you are not compressing the powder too much, there is no issue with the bullet base being below the shoulder/neck junction.
Magazine length often determines COL, and if the bullet is long, it is going to encroach on the powder space.
It generally does not cause any problems whatsoever.

Thank you

If 220 grain spitzer boat tails in .323 were any longer they would be touching the primer in my 325 WSM, lol. That's an exaggeration but they sure do stick into the case a long ways.

There is nothing to worry about, if you work up a load it won't matter one bit.

A holdover from the BP cartridge days. An overpowder wad not held against the base of the bullet, and contained within the neck, is bad news.
As is exposed lead bullet base in the heat of combustion.

Modern jacketed bullet centerfires do not have a problem with having the bullet protruding from the bottom of the neck.
Have a look at all the reloading recipies for 200 grain bullets in .308W to 2.8" OAL, for confirmation that it's nothing to worry about.

I've put about 1500 rds through my Norinco M14. Tried most of the medium burning powders. Both 4895's, 748, Varget, R-15 and 4064. Bullets were usually bulk 150 FMJ Hornady's. Also some 150 gr Hornady SP's. Settled on 42.0 grs of 4064. This is in commercial cases. This is a midrange load which has been accurate in my rifle.

As always never try an "internet load" without checking at least 2 reliable sources.

Thanks I just tried the loads I load and had great success at 50 yards with then time to hit an outdoor range and see what they are like at a 100 yards
