ok soo i got my new mosin sniper today, and was just wondering a few things from our experts, it has some tastefull import markings done on it denoting the cal, the importer a diamond with what looks like a r backwards n and c, my understanding was that the rifles coming into canada didnt have import markings, they are under the hand guard, and right under the bold handle, my question is is this normal.

another question i have is, is it normal for the barrell and reciever too have 2 different colours, the barrel is more of a black, and the reciever is a plumb, everything matches, not obvious restamps, and the stock doesnt have the "refurb thumb hole" (where you push the barrel bands off) and the scope doesnt have a date, but it matches the barrel and the font is all the same, soo i assume its orig too the rifle... pics will come and sorry about the bad grammar, and punctiation, just got back from the bar and a little hazy lol

Some scope weren't allways obviously dated, the first 2 numbers of the scopes serial number was the year if production so it should be between 42-45 maybe more since they were made till 68?

As for the purple receiver its somewhat normal for Russian refurbed rifles to have some parts have a purple to almost copper colored blueing. Svt-40s and kar98s bolts come to mind although I've never herd of that with mosins.

The import marks are normal, I think they need to be there because these are sold as hunting rifles instead of surplus military firearms
( it seems they don't sell them as freely as they used to unfortunatly ) so they need to have that on them.

bitumen, honestly you dont have too comment if you dont want too, im ignorant as too the information i asked, so there for, i am asking questions about a rifle i bought, too people who know, im proud of my recent pick up and want too know as much as possible, and caleb the first 2 numbers are 96 soooo i doubt thats the year it was produced, lol, id assume its the 43 at the end of the serial number because the rifle is a 44, but who knows im just happy too own her

I'd rather read a MN sniper thread than another Pmag thread lol

By year on the scope it 44 48298 if the year was 44 and the serial number was 48298.
Post some pics if you can.

Congratulations... enjoy it ... :)

As far as Moisin snipers go ....

Check the Russia - Milsurp Knowledge Library (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/content.php?r=126-russia

There's some good articles and extensive photo montages on both an authentic 1944 Mosin-Nagant M91-30 Sniper Rifle (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?p=1177 and also a 1954 Mosin-Nagant M52 Hungarian Sniper Rifle (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?p=1178

There's also some fun video showing ~Angel~, Scott and Badger, shooting various sniper rifles from their personal collections at 400 meters. Scott is using his 1942 Russian 91/30 Mosin-Nagant 7.62x54r.

Oh great, another "sniper rifle" thread...

We really don't need comments that contribute nothing to the original Post. The OP is relatively new here, and has asked a legitimate question so that he can gain information on his firearm and further his knowledge. This is a Milsurps Forum, and the Mosin-Nagant Sniper Rifle is certainly a Milsurp.

SIRUS115. Looks like you have a nice addition to your Milsurps. Do try to post some pictures for all of us to see.

Oh great, another "sniper rifle" thread...

Aren't you the guy who started the "what's he point thread"? If you aren't into Mosin snipers why take part in a Mosin sniper thread??

I'm not into tactical guns but you'll never see me in the black rifles forum making comments like "great another plastic gun with a sweet laser beam thread!!" :) :)
We all have areas of interest and theres no need to post in threads where you have nothing to add!

Op, please post some pics so we can take a look at your new toy. Some of us love "sniper rifle" threads!!:)

Saw it on phizbūk I think. ;)

Nice rifle. Mine strings a bit vertically, so maybe a loose screw somewhere, but the bore is so nice as to make me wonder how much it was ever used. I won't even contemplate shooting dirty old surplus in it (its for the svt40 besides).

Quickest way to get accuracy with any old military rifle (and the MN Sniper is definitely in this class) is with handloading your own ammo. Handloading, you can turn out stuff that makes any of the factory ammo look like garbage (with the possible exception of GP-11, which is ALL made to Match specs), although it does remain a good source of brass.

I have found that slightly-mild loadings tend to tighten-up the grouping with just about any old military rifle. When the rifles were designed and built, concerns were for ACCEPTABLE accuracy at the LONGEST practical range, so they went hot. We can make our rifles last longer, our shoulders ache less AND post better scores, just by loading for highest CONSISTENCY and backing off just a bit on the horsepower. You don't need a 1000-yrd load to smoke a 50-yard tin can; it just wears out your rifle.

For your MN Sniper, try 38 grains of 4895 powder with a Sierra 180 Pro-Hunter flatbase .311" bullet, all done up to the OAL of Ball round. This is an excellent test load for a .303 and it just happens to work VERY well in Moisin-Nagants.

Vertical stringing is definitely something out of whack in the bedding: loose front screw, stock pressure, something like that. Does it do it in rapid fire, slow fire or all the time?

Most important of all: have fun!

I probably got a shot off every 40 seconds or so. The first time I had it out it was rubbish. I then found the tang screw to be just about falling out. I need to give the whole thing a go over, which means reading up on what to look for - like OTHER loose screws!

I think the load I was using was something like 41 or 42 gr H4895 under a hornady rn .312 170ish grain. I've done no development since I intend to start casting for it and my M44. I just wanted to get it zeroed and then the mount adjusted to get the reticle more or less centred

My m44 with that load and the site raised to the 200m mark will make about a 3inch 10 shot group just below centre at 75metres after I beat the front sight over some. I expect a better shot would do better.

Old critter looks a lot better than some of mine, anyway!

I don't own a cellphone, never have, but I can REALLY understand the frustration!

Be sure to have fun.

And do try that load; you just might get a pleasant surprise.
