Bear defense shotgun

I carry for bears. So far this is what I have used:

Mossberg 500, light easy to carry, painful to shot magnum slugs out of.
Mossberg 590 with specops stock, excellent gun but longish and gets heavy, easier on the shoulder to shoot. Found the action is to far forward to be comfortable for my arms.
Dominion Grizzly, specops stock, hogue foregrip. solid gun, nice length, action a bit rough.
current gun: Fabarm with 14.5" barrel, spec ops stock, haven't carried it much but lighter than the Grizzly , smooth action and a great shooter.
 
As I posted earlier I do have pump 12 gauge shotguns but they mostly stay at home in the safe now.

On my last hike into alpine/bear country I carried my 14' barreled s/s T/C Contender carbine in 45 Colt loaded with 345gr WLNGC's...

I'm already planning my next hike I'm taking another one my s/s T/C Contender carbine this one has a 21" factory tapered barrel chambered in 375JDJ it will be loaded with 260gr Partitions @ 2300fps and on my next hike I will be taking another s/s T/C Contender carbine this barrel is a 22" bull chambered in 45-70 loaded with 425gr WLNGC's @ 1600fps.

I have most of my Contender carbine barrels set up with quick detachable rings and bases so pop the scopes off when I carry on a hike if I spot a deer/bear beyond 100 - 150 yards during hunting season I just pop the scope back on.

Nice light easy packing guns perfect anything I need to do including dealing with a grizzly but if I am in grizzly country I carry either my Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 or my 21" barreled Rem 700 in 375RUM...

yep the shotguns stay home...

Between the bears, giant praying mantis, crackheads, zombies, T-rex and cats with glocks I am scared to leave the basement without matching dual scoped 500 s&w mags on each hip, an AA-12 loaded with buckshot and slug alternating, and a man portable cut down Bushmaster 25 mm . I also duct tape phone books all over my vitals with level 4 ballistic plates jammed in them in a do it yourself Ursus style suit.

Another bear defense thread. Right on !!!!!!!!!

When I go out I carry a small sized condom and keep it over my index finger. If a bear attacks I shove my arm down his throat until my index finger protrudes out of his arse. I then bend my finger and pull like hell. This turns the bear inside out so he'll run off in the opposite direction.

The condom is to prevent bear crap from getting under my fingernail. Cleanliness is next to Godliness:D
 
Boomer, you said when you carry a handgun you carry the ruger vaquero... Do you have a special permit to carry it? If so how does one get a permit to carry a handgun in bear country... honest question. Im surprised im the first one to ask.

Thats because it has been explained over and over almost as often as a bear thread is posted.

You have to have a job working full time in remote wilderness areas to qualify for an Authorization to Carry handguns for defense permit.

+3, there's a lot of bad folks out in the woods these days and you definately want something better than a cell phone with the law a few hours away on the other end of it, if you can get a signal, to defend yourself with.

It's only going to get worse too, but I'll be damned if I can't enjoy the outdoors!

It's spring and time to head for the woods full of big bad bears! I may take the 45/70 out, or the 12" barreled 870, but the Ranch Hand in .45Colt with 340 grain bullets sure fit's nicely on the side of my fishing pack...
 
"...What do you use?..." Nothing. Yogi and Cindy don't frighten me. I frighten them with just my scent. I respect Yogi and Cindy though. I'll leave her kids alone and give him the trail if he wants it.
In any case, none of us will ever be fast enough if Yogi takes exception to us being where he wants to be. Especially if Yogi is within 100 yards.
No handgun or shotgun round will ever stop Yogi in his tracks either. Physics doesn't allow it.
 
I used to carry a bortto 410 hiker.

People that have told me the 410 doesn't pack enough punch I hand it to them and say shoot it you will see they're surprised how much punch it really has. I recently switched to a Domion arms 8.5 inch shotgun I wouldn't really recommend it due to the short barrel loseing allot of energy (it's weak as heck) I carry it with the following. Bear banger, Rubber slug (ment for bears), Winchester PDX1. I carry all of them in the tube as I modified mine to take the extra round. (replaced the follower with a small metal one and took the plastic parts out)

Now I'm more conserned with black bears when I'm sleeping they do stupid things (I know people that have been attacked while sleeping it did a test bite) The mountain lions are more what I'm conserned about as they're sneaky buggers that like to sneak up behind people and will hunt people. I've met conservation officers who said I've never seen a mountain lion and attacks are super rare. I've also met ones that said I've never seen try and hunt me in a pack like that before. (Not that uncommon for the weaker ones to gang up)
 
i'm scared to go bear hunting if the bears are arming themselves with shotguns. not sure how they passed the test to get there pals.
