Have they crept up in price a wee bit, or am I imagining things?

Nice write up. If I hadn't just bought a 1911 your man would have sold me on it. I never did care for the bead blasted look of the old finish - stainless ought to be brushed, IMO.

The prices have crept up more than a wee bit. I bought a stainless Commander 45 in Jan. 2013 and it was about $550. Now it's $720. That's a huge jump in price (nearly 30%). I liked the 45 so much I bought a stainless Commander 9mm a short time after. It was $590. Now it's also $720 or up about 22%. They're well made guns and very accurate for that price range but at those prices they're now into Ruger SR1911 territory and the Rugers have a lot of extras which the SAMs don't (nice grips, extended thumb safety, extended mag release, ventilated trigger, bevelled mag well, two mags, bushing wrench, soft pouch, etc.). Plus they're US made which for some people is a factor. I also have an SR1911 and its accuracy is just as good as the SAMs with a lot of extra bells & whistles.

I've always found Wolverine's prices very competitive and their service is great so this is not a knock on them. I'm guessing they have just passed on what the factory increased the prices by. However, for basically the same money they're not in a class with the Rugers. Prior to this price jump they were very good value for the dollar guns, just as the Norincos are. However, with the base model price gaps now growing to $160-$240 compared to the Norincos I don't see them as competitive for that market share any more as they are now upwards of 50% more expensive.

I'm not sure what niche SAM thinks they are going to fit into. Previously only the Norincos competed with them and the SAM's fit & finish was worth the extra $100 for a comparable model. However, they are now in the Remington R1, Ruger SR1911, STI Spartan (and probably others) class so their competition just got a lot tougher.

I guess they know something I don't but as a layman I can't see this helping their sales at all.

Just my 2 cents (or rounded down in Canada to zero cents).

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, we have some errors here, I need to double check. More to follow.

They certainly are getting expensive

I hope the posted prices are wrong. With nearly all of them being in the $440-$590 they were great value for the money and I recommended them to a lot of my friends and gave them good feedback in several posts on CGN. At $480-$720....meh.

As I said I need to spend some time and check the new prices, some I think are correct but some must be wrong. We deliberately held the prices very low when we first imported them to help break into the market. We had some initial QC problems but I think they are behind us now. Personally I think the basic model is the best value for money on the market. The Thunderbolt is expensive but you get a lot for your money, she is a favorite of mine. We have to pay a premium for anything in 9 mm, enhanced or stainless so some of our previous prices were incorrect, anyway I plan to work on a new corrected price list and post it here tomorrow ! At least that is my intention, but as we all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and I am well traveled.

So I wasn't hallucinating when I saw the prices on the Stainless SAM 1911. A couple nights ago I was debating whether I should buy a Ruger SR1911 or a Stainless SAM 1911 for $200 less. I wanted to pay EMT, so I had to wait until the morning to call in. The next day, the Stainless SAM 1911 is $35 more than the SR1911... so it was a no brainer to go with the Ruger. I thought I was hallucinating the next day in the morning :p

I hate it when I hallucinate in the morning

I noticed in the blog post that apparently the stainless models are about to be discontinued?!?! Really? That's really too bad, I thought that a nice low price for a good stainless 1911 in 9mm was a really cool deal...but it sounds like they won't be on the market in stainless soon.

I'm also curious about why the 9mm variants seem to cost more...I mean, that's just silly for some of the 9mm versions to cost $90 more than the .45 ?!?

Notice the stainless Thunderbolt is $900... isn't that around $250 more than an M&P40, or $180 more than the Ruger 1911? I mean, bottom end Kimbers are only $100 more, aren't they?

I dunno, last week I handled a SAM 1911 and really liked what I saw, for a $510 pricetag at the local gunstore in Red Deer. I thought "yea, I'd buy a 9mm one in stainless for $580". But now all the stainless ones are $720 (or more) and about to be discontinued...doesn't exactly reasure me. Makes me curious about whether the company's having issues with the stainless ones for possible strength, or perhaps galling issues (stainless on stainless in the 1980's and before used to have galling/smearing issues on contact surfaces).

I mean, let's think about this: these SAM handguns are basically "unknowns" to Canadian buyers for the most part. So how do we know they are worth as much or more than a Ruger, or Remington, brands who are proven and known to Canadians, even if their 1911's are still relatively new? How do we know these won't have frame or slide cracks at 4000 rounds?! The Norincos have proven themselves for years, and while they aren't pretty, we know they can be made reliable easily, and have near indestructible frames and slides. And those can be had CHEAP... $300 for a nice one...but the CanAm with 500 rounds means the actual 1911 is costing only $170! Yea, those ones are kinda ugly...but they are proven to us over decades of use in Canada and the USA (yes a bunch were imported to the US before their ban on Chinese guns, and they are so strong and proven that they have actally appreciated in price).

So ugly but proven ultra strong Norc at $170, new but trusted manufacturer Ruger at $720, and SAM Thunderbolt stainless at $900...

I was being polite, plus my memory is shaky as it is ;)

Add one more to the list of those wishing to be enlightened as to why it's more costly to get a 9mm out of them. I know 45 is king in the 1911 and no doubt what the majority of their production is geared for, but one would think with the popularity of 9mm in general that SAM would be making a wad of them.

I was thinking that if I really liked the 1911 platform I'd look at something like a SAM enhanced in 9mm down the road. Bought a 45 for my first one, naturally.

Just to reconfirm a new corrected price list will be here this morning. The Thunderbolt drops slightly, most have a modest increase apart from a few of the Stainless models which do have a fair increase. Sorry for the inconvienace this may have caused, the error was mine alone.

We do pay a premium for anything in 9 mm, that is just the way it is, SAM produce a lot more guns in .45.

The reason SAM are dropping stainless is not due to any failure in the steel but simply that it is not cost effective for them to produce stainless guns with the high quality finish that we demand for the Canadian market. We have not had a single SAM frame fail in either blue or stainless.

$720.00 for a SAM 1911 vs $685.00 for a ruger 1911 there is really no comparison the ruger is by far the better gun I would say the ruger should be a $1000.00 gun and the SAM a $500.00 gun

Thanks for the update.

Is this import tariff hike I've heard about hitting manufacturers in the Philippines? I've not seen anything other than the sun news video that was posted on the forums here a few weeks back, talking about hikes on imports from China and similar countries.
