Well I wanted to see what the fuss is all about over hear, so I got me a black rifle.

I've been lurking a few months trying to decide, also saving some cash to get a rifle. Not knowing anything makes shopping pretty easy. I wanted new, and my only other requirement was non-restricted. I was going to buy an 858 and dress it up but I knew that wouldn't scratch the itch. Swiss, a little too steep. XCR, hell ya.

I found a new XCR L in 7.62x39, black and full of awesome. :)

I've mounted a Hi-Lux 1-4x24 CMR AK762.
Burris AR-P.E.P.R. QD mount.
Magpul AFG and MAG502 front sling loop.
I got a rear qd swivel and sling, don't remember brands.
I picked up 4 XCR 10 round pistol mags and 3 neutered 10 round.
700 rounds of surplus and 1 diamond ring for Mrs.9, yes, for real. Gotta do what ya gotta do.

A group photo from today. My 700 in .223 and my Savage .22

First impressions were good, it's a very user friendly rifle, everything in fingers reach. It's got a lot of weight up front though. I'm not quite sold on the faststock, I'll be looking for something new.

I've run 380 rounds through it, the first 100 on 4, now I'm down to 1. It still throws the case 10 feet. No hiccups, every mag feeds great, and it's a blast to shoot. I need more ammo, a lot more.

This is some quick shooting after I figured out how to use the trigger. 10 rounds of suplus, ~2 moa. I was smiling large. :) The 10 rounds took about 20 seconds, shooting prone with my Mpod as a front rest.

Thanks for looking and for the record, Loctite is a name brand. :p

Nice choice - congrats. If your shooting surplus, get in there and clean real good.

BTW - where did you find 7.62 pistol mags recently?

Good thinking on the ring. I'd say that was a tactical decision with good long term strategic implications [notiwhtstanding the possibility of creating dangerous precedent ;) ].

Either way, nice rifle!!

Thanks all,

I found the pistol mags at Reliable Gun. I bought 4, they still have 2. Chilliwack Dart & Tackle also has 2 in stock.

Thoughts on the CMR; the jury's still out. I like my precision shooting so I'm new to this 4x magnification. Takes a little getting use to. The reticle is quite fine and hard to read, illuminated is great. 1x is actually ~1.5, adjustments are positive and smooth, and it's heavy for it's size. Overall I'm happy with it but I'll reserve my full opinion until I hit 1000ish rounds.
I bought the scope from Wanstalls and got a smoking good deal. I bought the Burris there too and it's worth every cent.

Ok, so a quick update. It's all good, almost :).

I'm 955 rounds in and I'm having a blast. I'm more than satisfied with the XCR, it shoots flawlessly. In 955 rounds I've had 2 ejection failures, both on gas setting 1, I keep it on 2 full-time now. The fast stock is still on it but not for long, too much rattle and flex. I've swapped the grip and rail covers with Magpul OD green, it's subtle and the grip feels much nicer. Every round has been corrosive surplus so I've stayed busy cleaning it. It's easier to clean than an SKS, the only hard part is inside the mb. Except for some wear on the ejection port the gun is spotless. I've been keeping a close eye on the buffer pad, still looks healthy.

The Burris mount, well I've never had a second thought about it, I guess that means it's doing it's job well.

Ok, the Hi-Lux :(. Overall I was very happy with it. It holds zero and stayed together for 955 rounds ;). No biggie really, the rubber seal in the ocular lens came 1/2 way out. My scope has a cloud in it, it's a big mofo too. I do believe the scope to be well built and I'll be optimistic that this was a fluke, maybe I'm naive.
I want to replace the scope with same and I'm sure I'll be taken care of. A heads up to anybody with this scope, the extension post for the zoom can be bought at Wolverine. It's the best $15 you'll ever spend!

I've been having a lot of fun with this rifle and just found out about Tac Rifle at Thompson Mt, I might have to check it out.

Cheers

For the FAST stock, remove the set screw on the side, take it all apart and clean the threads good. Lube the wear areas and reassemble with some threadlocker on the set screw. Torque the set screw down to tighten up the folding mech. It will take all the play out of the folding mech leaving just the play in the extension. It will lock up solid every time! The cheek piece and buttpad are the only things I don't like about it.

Thanks supernova, I'll try that tonight.

So it looks like I'll be running BUIS for a while. My local retailer can't do anything in house with the scope. I wasn't expecting them to, but I sure was hoping. I was a little put-off when asked, "what did you do to it?". He was serious, like I did something to the scope intentionally.

Oh well, not the end of the world.

The Burris mount is good. Just takes a few minutes to play with the right hand side dials to get the perfect tightness and still be able to easily use the quick release. I use it on a fair number of my black rifles.

The Hi-Lux. I have a couple of these as well and one is in a Burris PEPRE QR mount. I'm using it on an ADCOR AR rifle. It's a good price effective solution for a 1-4x with good glass and a nice etched glass reticle rather than wire. The only flaws are the box for your sight picture is a bit small, short eye relieve (Which can actually be an advantage on some black rifles due to rail space etc) and field of view at the 4x. You get what you pay for. This is a good optic at a medium price point. Don't expect NF. But it's still pretty good. I really like the reticle as well.

Nice pics. I'm sure the scope will be taken care of. Just so you know I once had a Zeiss with a fleck inside it. So it can happen to any manufacturer. I also have the quick lever for changing the magnification. It's an extra but I have to agree with the OP, it's worth it.
