10/22 receiver upgrades that make the biggest difference?

The best mod for shootability you can make on a 10/22 is ordering a match grade hammer and installing it....Brownells, about $30.
Get a Power Custom hammer if you have an aluminum trigger assembly, and a Volquartsen if you have a newer plastic trigger group.
Replace the firing pin and extractor with Volquartsen or Kidd pieces, and polish the bolt as described on sites like gulfcoastmasons.com
and tactical22.net. That's also cheap. The best mod for accuracy is to buy an aftermarket .920 barrel with a match chamber...it's a bit
of money but can get your groups under a half inch at 50 yards with good ammo. Trigger hammer, pin & extractor & bolt polish, and barrel.

Removing the bolt hold open. Best mod ever!

PITA fiddly bit of sheet metal!

I could see the relative merits of having it, if the bolt was held open after the last round was fired, and it didn't take two hands to operate (in stock form). But mostly, it was in the way. Removed it, been happy since.

One of these days I'll get onto radiusing the bolt and tuning it up to cycle on the subsonics or Quiets. But for now, that is all I have really done to it.

Easiest fix for me was Dlask receiver, Kidd bolt, Kidd SS trigger group, and all the little goodies that go with it, including a Kidd barrel, lol

Kidd bolt and charging handle worked wonders for how the rifle feeds and ejects. Replacing even just the charging handle is a great option as Kidd comes interchangeable with different strength springs depending on what ammo you prefer to shoot. I'm not sure why I even bought a 10/22 to trick out, once I get a new receiver I can put the old one back together.

I don't get how guys need two hands for the bolt release... I can do it 1 handed with either hand both locking back and unlocking. Not fiddly at all

Alright. Works for you.

When I first got mine, I had several encounters where I had inadvertently caused the action to lock open when shooting, due to hand position or the rest I was using. So I ditched the hold open altogether.

On a more or less average casual silhouette shoot at the local range, I typically see this same thing happen several times in a night. Hand position, mainly. And a cluster f**k two hand job to get it to release, by the guys not practiced in the one handed art of manipulating it.

<shrug> It was easy to take it out, and I have not missed it. It did however, cause one other member there some consternation as he tried to teach me how it worked, and he could not find it! :)

Get some good polishing compounds, follow the steps in the 10/22 tips and tricks thread that is sticky'd. Take your time. I'm a very picky shooter when it comes to the feel of the trigger and how smooth a semi cycles. I've done all the work on mine myself and am very pleased with it. Acutally happier with my 10/22 than I was with a lot of other more expensive rifles. The biggest thing that made my ruger more reliable though was switching ammo.. Makes a huge difference. I won't use anything but CCI Velocitor in mine.. Very accurate in my set up and never had a fte or ftf.
