So I'm out for a casual stroll through the woods with my CZ 858, which I haven't shot in over a year when a bush rabbit appears. I chamber a round, aim and click..... nothing. I rack the action ejecting the round and chambering another one. Click... nothing. I repeat this two more times with the same result. I remove the magazine and cycle the action about fifteen times, pulling the trigger each time. By now the bunny took off but I'm more concerned about my rifle dillema. I left the mag out and just grabbed a round off the ground, examined it (it had a slight dent on the primer) and inserted it into the chamber. I recalled having some old 7.62X45 for a vz52 which sometimes didn't fire the first time so I tried the round that had I picked up three or four times. When it did go off there was an extremly loud report and my right hand which was on the pistol grip was "shringing", like it was hit with a sand blaster, and the rifle was locked up. After I ensured I still and all my digits and no holes where should't be I returned home and opened the action with a rubber hammer. What the he!! happened? Did the action not go into full battery? Can the gun even fire if the lugs aren't "locked" up? Bad ammo? I've had this ammo for years in a ziploc bag so I don't even know the brand.

Never insert a round in the chamber and drop the bolt on it, also never put a round with a light strike back in your gun.

You had a out of battery fire and there is probaly a good reason why it is not locking.

maybe just a very hot load , what ammo is this ? chinesse ? the bolt was fully closed before you shoot it or not ? i never see a case like that , at least you are ok ,

Well your first problem is that the cz 858 takes 7.62x39 and not 7.62x45[/QU

REALLY? com on man.

The 762-45 were fired out a firearm designed for them. I recalled an episode with old ammo while shooting a CZ 52 and the ammo had issues. These calibers are easly identified and a mix up is very unlikley for anybody shooting these rifles for 20 years.
Anyways I think the mod is correct here.

He didn't say he shot 7.62x45, he was using that as an example.

That certainly wasn't in battery judging by the bulge in the case. The "light strikes" were most likely the marks left by chambering the rounds. The CZ, and most other semi-autos with floating firing pins, do it every time you chamber a round.

OP, how about some pics of the bolt and chamber area, please.

Check for a seperated casing in your chamber and any rust in side your gun. Also insure your bolt and locking peice are not damaged.

Glad your ok :)

Give me a few minutes and they'll be up.

Here's a couple pics of the bolt face and chamber. Yea.... there's some rust\grit in there.

Chamber doesn't look like there's a broken case.

I wonder if your firing pin was gummed up and stuck after sitting for a year. Maybe it took a few hits to break it loose and then it jammed forward causing the out of battery ignition?

Must be dirty. I guess I'll have to take the Brakleen to the thing and get her all spotless.
If the mod is still around...Whats wrong with inserting a round into the chamber, by hand, and then letting the action slam home?
Thanks for the advice everybody. I was counting on this site and it has delivered as expected.

Because the bolt moves much faster without the drag of stripping the round from the mag. When it slams shut, the free-floating firing pin can ignite the primer.

It the same process that causes the small primer indent on unfired rounds loaded from the mag, but in that case the extra speed causes the round to be ignited. It won't happen every time, but it can happen.

That's why I keep expecting Jamie and Adam to end up with a Garand facial on Mythbusters.

Hmmmm.

Just to confirm, the OOB occurred when you pulled the trigger on what you thought was a locked action, or when you ran the bolt closed?[/QU

After I ran the action, believing the round was chambered & locked, I held the rifle at the hip pointed in a safe direction and pulled the trigger. KA-POW
