During a recent trip to Brantford, Ontario, I again visited the Canadian Military Heritage Museum. Since my last visit three years ago, they have added many interesting items to their displays. Rick and the Staff gave me a fine reception and it was great to renew an old friendship.

Summer Hours for the Museum are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, May 1 to October 1. Winter hours are on a reduced schedule. It is located at 347 Greenwich Street, and the phone number is 519-759-1313.

If you are in the Southern Ontario area, it is well worth the visit. But, plan on spending several hours there.

Is nice, but I'm going to put in a plug for the former museum of the Regiments in Calgary. We do have some good military museums "out West" ;)

I agree that there are some very good local Museums that are well worth visiting. I live in Western Manitoba, and there are four within an hour's drive. In this case, the CMHM in Brantford is about an hours drive, more or less, from Toronto, Hamilton or London and I would venture to say that anyone visiting it will not be disappointed. If you are interested in a particular item, then it might be wise to phone and inquire first, as some of the exhibits or equipment is loaned out at times. When I was there, the Quad, Limber and 25 Pounder Gun/Howitzer was out on loan. One of the great things is a terrific Library of books that can be looked at and viewed for reference purposes.

Check out the Fort Garry Horse Museum in Winnipeg too. The Artillery Museum at Shilo has a great display. For Aircraft Types, there is the Commonwealth Air Training Museum at Brandon, Manitoba, airport.

One of the reasons I made this post was to give our Members an awareness of a lot of History, Military and otherwise, that can be found in smaller local Museums. While the Canadian Military Heritage Museum displays items from all three Services, with displays of 1812, the Boer War, WWI, WWII, Korea and newer times, it also has a great section on the local (Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk County) units. While some are behind glass, many are within inches of your walk throughout the building.

While there are a few "professional" Museums, where the Staff is paid, most of these smaller Museums rely on local Volunteers to work, repair and Guide. They could not operate without these people who freely give their time and interest.

Even the Building itself has a Military History. It was once part of the old Massey-Harris Verity works, and I can still remember my Mother's stories of working there, building parts for Mosquito aircraft in WWII.

It is surprising what you can find, if you take the time to look for it.

YOUR Mom, Buffdog, built Mosquitoes. MY Mom built Hudsons and, later in the War, she built ME.

I wonder how many of the guys on here have or had Moms or Grandmas who built aircraft (my Grandma built Camels) in one of the Big Wars? Or who built Shells or Small Arms Ammunition or tank parts or Rifles or Stens or something? The contribution of British and Canadian women to the War Effort cannot be overemphasized: without the Toys that the Girls were making, the Boys would have had nothing to play with!

An entire GENERATION mobilised for War, not once but TWICE. Now, after half a century of corrupt Lieberal Governments, I don't think you could mobilise the current generation to come to a free drunk with an orgy thrown in. It would be too much work, it would require too much effort and planning....... If it happens again, the people right HERE will become the core.

An excellent collection of Really Neat Stuff, Buffdog! And VERY well organised, too!

Now, is this a PUBLICLY-OWNED collection...... or PRIVATELY-owned?

And Admission is only a Fin, and cheaper for us Old Folks and Students and Kids........ great place to spend a whole afternoon!

Thanks for showing!

In WW1 my grandma used to put the dope on the linen covering of the Handley-Page Vimy bombers, the wings of which were built at the Leighton Buzzard factory in Bedfordshire, England.

Amen to that Smellie,My Mom painted Harvards & Ansons & Airacobra's during the war,the same place that your Dad was at.She used to tell me how they got so sick from the fumes and were told to drink a glass of milk and get back to work.Hats off to all of of the people that supplied the equipment to all of the troops. Be it ammo or equipment or whatever. Also I think you are right in your assumption that if the need ever arises again it will be from people from this and other like-minded forumsthat will form the core.

Thanks for posting those pictures Buffdog!! That looks like a very nice collection of goodies, and for sure would be on my "to do list" if I was out that way.

I want to hit up a few of the local museums this summer as you've spoken so highly of them that I must see them!!
