Are night sights really needed?

Hey guys.

Thinking of getting a g17 but i cant make up my mind if i should get night sights or not. 100 difference. Only for range use.

In my opinion they work counter productive in the daylight compared to other options, but everyone's eyes react differently to various sight platforms

is your range dark during the days/times when you'd want to shoot or be allowed to shoot?

i wouldn't reject a gun that has them, but i wouldn't really spend the extra $150 or so to add them as an option.

a fiber optic, on the other hand - i'd certainly give that a go.

Up here since you can't carry anyway they are a lot like fishing lures. Fishing lures are designed to catch fisherman more than fish. The main reason you get night sights is because you can. It's no different than the AR guys who have 34 feet of Picatinny rail on their AR's, you don't need a reason other than you want to

Looks like you are ordering from police ordinance as well. I ordered my G17 a while back, I hope to pick up this week. I decided to stick with factory sites for now. I can always add the night sight later on if I need them. plus for range shooting??? not really needed. Are you a LEO as well??

Yea i forgot about fiber optic sights. The g22 i have has night sights and dont find that i need them. Fiber optic i go.

Get the best of both. Trueglo tfo's are fiber optic and tritium have them on my g17 and love them.

Haha yup! They just got back to me today with the pricing. Cant wait to order. Im an auxiliary officer so i guess it counts. They sent me all the info and forms for it.

If you know ahead of time that you will never ever shoot in low light, there's no advantage.

Almost all of my guns have night sights.

Some ranges/matches do low or no light shoots. For bumps in the night they're nice to have, but that's theoretically speaking.. I would say go with something other than stock ball and box sights that come standard. From there its whatever floats your boat, the fibre optics are nice.

Got FO on G17, NS on G22 and Adv Tactical on G21. Def. like the FO.

Fibre Optic is probably the best choice if you are certain you will never need to take aim in a low light situation. Personally for an extra hundred bucks I'd take the night sights - you will make some of it back on resale.

If it's too dark to see your sights, it's probably too dark to identify your target.

Not all situations with low light equate to not being able to see or identify your target.
