On a whim at the local shop I picked up some Norinco .223 on the way out the door. Thing is I forgot to ask what grain the bullet is. Can anyone help me out? The bullets came packed in paper in bundles of 40 rounds. I am unsure the year.

i like said before. 780rds into my 1600 with zero issues and somewhat clean. all my brass is reloadable and shots good at 50 yards so far. i find MFS and Win. Whitebox is dirtier and clumps my BCG more than chinese surplus. no campfire with my carbine length 16 inch

** i use only frog lube paste , solvent and CLP wipes on my AR **

Is the norc stuff bi-metal jacketed?

Long read but worth it if you want your rifle to last.

NO, the norc is not bi-metal jacketed, run a magnet over it and see for yourself...

It is extremely hot ammo however, and if your using a 1in7 barrel and notice key holing with the Norinco ammo, it is likely going to fast for the barrel and not catching the rifling in the bore, thus causing extreme wear on the throat and chamber.

I have shot lots of Norinco through my 1/7 swiss arms when i run outa 62gr, im guessing about a crate 1600 rds .. I have never once seen a keyhole on paper and the ammo is on par with 55gr Federal AE in accuracy but the Norinco is about 150 fps hotter .. I just pulled 20 norinco bullets and measured them with my callipers , all were .224 i could not find any high or low spots in the projectile ?? Not sure what your talking about man??? OP dont be scared of this ammo, it will not wear out your barrel prematurely , but shooting your barrel when its full of water will lol.

Bought a create (1600 rds) on Saturday ... Put 300 rds down range in my xcr and had no problems. But I did notice the gun was getting pretty warm.

Perhaps you can explain this then....

ALL TARGETS SHOT WITH 1in7" TWIST BARRELS, ALL USING NORINCO 55GR YELLOW BOX HEAD STAMP CJ 93
and none of these issues have been encountered when shooting the same ammo through my 1in10" twist Swiss. Also of note, in 2000 rounds through the 1in9" twist XCR, NO key holeing encountered at any time. It really seems to be the 1in7 barrel's, unless someone else has an explanation.

From an Advanced Carbine course in March (14.5" barreled Stag AR with 1in7 twist, at about 12yds)

and this

From Darren at one shot tactical (11.5" barreled AR with 1in7 twist, standing, red dot at 25yrds)

and these

from my 20.79" barreled Swiss Arms, with 1in7 twist at about 3-5yds

Uh, no.

Fast twist rates do not stabilize light bullets properly causing the keyholing seen above. Has absolutely nothing to do with "not catching the rifling", nor will it cause premature erosion any moreso than another bullet of a heavier weight. High velocity and rapid fire contribute to bore and throat erosion, not twist rates.

It's not as fun, but you'll prolong your barrel life and reduce heat build-up by shooting AR15-pattern rifles limiting your pace to no more than say 12 rounds per minute.

I was interested in that photo ost posted today. I have fired 2+ crates out of a tavor and ar15 with 20 and 14.5" 1/7 barrel. I have never had a keyhole on a paper target. Has anyone else used this ammo in a tavor or 14.5" ar 1/7 and had key holes? I am worried as I have 3 more crates of norc .223 and a Nea 7.5 on the way.

Someone mentioned just the other day that this had happened with their Tavor, it may have been on the OST post....

EDIT: Yes I was right, read through the comments on the OST post on FB and you'll see one guy claiming this occurs with his Tavor. Quote: "Happens in my Tavor also, not only to shorties."

I have discussed this with many informed and knowledgeable individuals (including the Swiss smith that examined the barrel) who feel this is part of whats happening, and is wearing out the bore on some of these rifles prematurely. Take it or leave it, you are entitled to you opinion and I'm not going to argue with you.

Double post

Well then im guessing your barrel was ####ed from overheating , improper cleaning or shooting it full of water ext. .. Im not just making #### up buddy , i have shot a crapload of that norinco ammo on paper and NEVER seen one keyhole , The headstamping on the ammo i have is C J 95 .. The projectiles i checked are all within spec . Any decent shape 1/7 barrel will stabilize any 55gr bullet ......
