recommend a 1911 (or similar) in 40cal

ok, so as my dilemma reaches its end, i'm sticking with 40cal. which means i'd like to now find a 1911 (or similar) that's chambered in 40 to handle my stout handloads.

requirements are:
it's a 5" gov't size 1911 (or has the same operating principles)
no polymer guns (only steel or aluminum)
easy to find spare mags for it (i usually have 6-12 mags for any "style" of gun i own)
new only (no used stuff this time around), and
not a $1500 custom piece - BUT i do expect a great fit-n-finish, so NO NORINCO!!! let's say ruger sr1911 / sti spartan level of quality.

i'm aware of the SAM Omega from Wolverine, and it's priced nicely
i'm aware of a CZ75 in 40al, also from Wolverine, but it's a DA/SA because of the decocker
if the sti spartan is made in 40, i'd buy that -- but it isn't made in 40cal. yet....
there is the beretta 96a1, which is nice and i'll probably buy it eventually, but again it's a DA/SA


what should i be really looking at???


-- edit, note that i'm hoping not to land in Trojan territory as far as price. yes, a Trojan feels nice, but it's quite spendy

STI Trojan is one of the best choices for a 1911 in the $1100 range. .40 in the 1911 isn't produced as commonly as you might think (i.e. lots of companies produce 1911s, but only a few of those produce a 1911 chambered in .40 S&W). STI support by Freedom Ventures is excellent.

Go with Tripp Cobra mags. You can get 10 round single stack magazines that are good quality and available directly from the manufacturer. These are the most popular choice in IPSC for single stack. I'm not suggesting you want to shoot IPSC, but magazines are/can be one of the major sources of reliability issues in a 1911. Tripp Cobra magazines will minimize those issues and they are vetted by guys and gals who shoot in significant volume.

It's good that you are handloading. Some 1911s chambered in .40 require the cartridge to be loaded longer than spec to increase reliability. Myself, I don't have this problem, but a number of guys I know load "long" (i.e. 1.16-1.2 OAL). If this is the case, you will have to use 10mm magazines.
 
anything in the Spartan / Ruger price bracket? to be honest i'm eyeing the SAM Omega quite a bit. don't see them in person much, but did handle a RIA a while ago (2-3 years ago) and was quite impressed with how it felt, esp side-by-side with a Sig
 
I have a SAM.40s&w, nice tight gun with good finish, no complaints. I use ACT mags in .45 with it, also from wolverine and $18 a piece which is nice.

eh?? the 45 mags hold-n-feed 40 ammo??

I have those mags, they are nicely made and very affordable... gonna try to stuff some 40s in them tonight, but it never occurred to me that they'd actually hold and feed properly. you sayin' they do?????

Do the SAM's have the firing pin safety system in 'em or are they true to the original 1911A1?

Yes....1911 .45 mags work just fine with .40 s&w stuffed in them....actually work better then the .40 cal mags I got with the gun.
They are series 70, just the way 1911's are suppose to be made :)
If you want to see more pics and reviews, SAM is sold in the US under the ATI (American Tactical Imports) brand name. Lots more of them down south the in Canada.

I haven't looked at wolverine yet, but the CZ-75B in .40cal is either a SD/DA with a ambidextrous safety or a SA only with a ambidextrous safety,both of which can be carried #### and locked much like a 1911,unless you're looking at the SP-01 tactical, which has a decocker.

Had a CZ75b in 40cal ,sold it ,kicking my a** for doing it.

SAMmy looks nice! though i'd be tempted to put SOMETHING on the left side of the slide. looks naked. clean, but naked.

btw, i tried those SAM/ACT 45cal mags with my 40s&w ammo. i'll be damned - they hold rounds quite well, right up to 9 of them.

anyhoo, i may just take a chance on one of these... and swap the sights, at least the front for a fiber optic.
 
I have a fairly expensive ($1700) Dlask Pro 1911 in .40S&W. I bought the gun used and it was well used. I have had issues with mags, I have a .40 cal mag that came with the gun and it doesn't work at all rounds jam sideways, I have a few 10 round steel mags (no name on them) and the gun does not stay open on the last round. I have a .45 Cal mag but have not tried it. The 1911 is great and accurate as well. Due to the hard use it needs a tune-up but I would recommend Mr. Dlask's guns. The trigger is great and the gun looks great as well. As a side note I tried a new Glock 22 beside the 1911, both .40S&W. The 1911 is great the Glock is a beast, kicks like hell, shoots wide and loud as well. It is my technique for sure but I'll take the 1911 any day. Conventional wisdom says stick with .45ACP with a 1911, there is some truth to this statement but the .40S&W is a similar round to the .45ACP. If you have the same projectile weight the lead has the same speed and energy if I remember correctly.

Bought a sam for ipsc so i will be adding stuff to it and beating the crap out of it at least as bad as my spartan. We will see how it holds up.
